SHOULD COLLEGE EMPLOYEES BE ALLOWED TO CARRY CONCEALED

WEAPONS ON CAMPUS?

Allowing college employees and students to carry weapons on campus is a nice,

and a safety precaution is taken in instilling a sense of security to individuals since they

have the weapons required for self-defense in case of an attack. However, it can also be

the cause of many unexpected accidents and crimes in the learning environment.

The idea of letting individuals carry concealed weapons on campus is a nice, a

caring thought if what the law is seeking is to make college students, and employees feel

secure (Gilroy 113). Safety is achieved as anyone can defend himself or herself in case of

an attack, as they can engage up to almost any form of attack from anyone seeking to

harm them. That is an excellent idea if all the individuals on campus are law-abiding,

responsible and their full intentions are self-defense.

In cases where mass shooting is experienced, and people have no weapons for

self-defense, they have to wait for the police to arrive and provide them with protection.

If students and campus employees are allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus, it

can be relatively easy to form them to defend themselves and may minimize the harm

caused by the shooters/anyone intending to harm them.

With the idea of allowing individuals to carry concealed weapons in campus; we

take, the assumption that all individuals who have permits to own concealed weapons

were law abiding before they were given license and their full concern was self-defense,

but after they have the gun no one can tell. In consideration of responsible citizens, there

will be those who will go astray and maybe grow malicious intentions and no one can

predict what they can do if permitted to carry weapons on campus.

In the campus environment, the largest population are youths; who are young, and

their minds are still developing. Their naive minds can be easily manipulated into

committing the crime(Marilyn 77), for the mere curiosity or fun in doing something new,

most young youths like the rush they get when they do something illegal or something

that attracts a lot of attention. People with malicious intentions may take advantage of

their easily manipulated mind and use them to commit crime making it easy for them to

commit a crime and work away with it.

Some people have difficulties in controlling their emotions. And the probability

for them to use their guns irresponsibly is higher. Regular interpersonal confrontations

may lead to people pulling the weapons they legally own on each other and at times

bringing about serious crime or fatal accidents. That is common in our daily lives in the

community, as we usually experience fights and misunderstanding among individuals.

The highest rate of accidental/unintended offenses is seen in 19- to 25- year old youths

(Samantha 186) who are mainly found in the campus environment. In college, there is a

lot of stress where giving the students guns would aggravate violence instead of stopping

it. Guns are such lethal self-harm methods for any individuals since it can cause a lot of

damage in case of a slight misuse.

The advantages of allowing guns on colleges are less and have few positive

impacts. On the other hand, disadvantages are excessively many and aggravated in the

sense of negative effects.

Trained officers should take the role of keeping individual citizens feel safe,

preventing crime and apprehend criminals. That is because; with many people possessing

concealed weapons on campus, in cases of mass shootouts everyone will be shooting

around. The criminals and the individuals who will be trying to defend themselves, this

make it very difficult for police to distinguish who is the criminal and who are good

people protecting themselves from the criminals since there will be poor coordination

between the police and the individuals who are involved in the shooting.

Carrying lethal weapons on campus has more disadvantages than advantages; in

conclusion, concealed weapons should not be allowed on campus; this is because it

would not make the learning environment safer.
