 Can  Make  Everyone  Better  Off  

 
Here  is  a  sample  essay  question  and  what  follows  are  three  
sample  responses  -­‐  one  earning  a  perfect  score  (6  out  of  6),  one  
earning  a  4,  and  one  earning  a  1.  After  each  essay  there  is  a  
written  explanation  of  each  of  the  components  that  the  essay  is  
graded  on:  focus  and  meaning;  content  and  development;  
organization;  language  use,  voice  and  style;  and  mechanics  and  
conventions.  While  it  is  not  expected  that  anyone  will  earn  a  
perfect  score  of  a  6  this  is  the  model  that  one  should  strive  for  
in  preparing  to  write  a  good  economic  essay.  The  grade  that  
you  will  see  on  your  first  submission  is  provisional.  The  Write  
Experience  software  will  give  you  a  score  along  with  
suggestions  on  how  to  improve  your  essay.  It’s  imperative  that  
you  take  the  suggestions  seriously  before  commencing  with  
your  revision.  Three  submissions  are  allowed  on  each  essay  
during  the  course  of  this  term.  The  purpose  is  to  help  you  write  
better  and  better,  not  to  catch  you  with  your  guard  down.  That  
being  said  there  is  a  deadline  for  each  essay  so  all  three  
submissions  must  be  made  before  that  time.  When  the  
deadline  is  over  I  will  only  take  the  highest  score  of  each  of  
your  submissions.  Then  I  will  normalize  all  the  scores  for  the  
class.  What  does  this  mean?  It  means  that  I  will  take  the  
highest  score  earned  by  any  one  student  and  base  everyone  
else’s  score  on  that  grade.  What  that  means  is  that  it  won’t  be  
necessary  to  score  a  perfect  6  to  earn  a  100.  If  the  highest  score  
in  the  class  is  a  5  that  person  will  earn  a  100.  If  another  student  
earns  a  4  that  student  will  earn  a  score  of  80  (4  out  of  5  instead  
of  4  out  of  6).  Notice  that  without  normalizing  the  score  the  
student  with  a  4  would  have  earned  a  66.7%  (4/6  times  100%)
