HELLO!
I am Brianalee Perez
SOCIETY LIMITS THE
DISABLED
3

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS TOPIC

⊗ I chose this topic because I took a course on the culture of disability
and it allowed my eyes to view disability in a different way.
⊗ When I first took the class asked myself“what could I possibly learn
from this class.”
⊗ I thought I knew everything there was to know about disabilities, but I
was wrong.
HOW IS SOCIETY LIMITING PEOPLE
WITH DISABILITIES
● Not every building is Handicap Accessible
● Not permitting people with disabilities to do
certain jobs
● Shunning people with disabilities away from
the community.
5

HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE BUILDINGS

⊗ The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requires all buildings to
be handicap accessible and for all people with disabilities to be
able to take part in all programs and events
⊗ The ADA applies more to government buildings, so others get
away with little to no accessibility.
6

HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE BUILDINGS

⊗ A survey conducted with about 554 disabled people stated they

have encountered a barrier while trying to get around.
⊗ 20% says it happens at least once a day, while 12%say it
happens more than once.
⊗ Big cities such as New York do not have a poor transportation
system.
7

JOB RESTRICTIONS
⊗ States pay employers to hire people with disabilities.
⊗ Only one-third of the working age people in the US are
employed.
⊗ Only certain people with disabilities are more fit than
others for a job.
8

SHUNNING
⊗ Friends and family become more distant after a person becomes
disabled,making the person feel alone.
⊗ Mainly disabled children with a learning disability struggle with social
acceptance from peers and are often bullied.
⊗ Acceptance and treatment of a person with a disability ranges on what
kind of disability , awareness, and exposure.

FIELD WORK

⊗ I volunteered at a local church.

⊗ I made a lesson plan to teach kids about disabilities.
⊗ Some of the disabilities I taught them about was learning
disabilities, autism, communication, mental vision and
hearing, and physical.
⊗ through the lesson I helped them understand how to make
disabled people feel welcomed.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?

Acceptance is not
choice, it is a right
for all disabled.
Disability
doesn’t just
come in
physical form.

Disabled people are more

capable than what society
deems them fit to be.
15

There is no greater
disability in society, than
the inability to see a
person as more.
