GREENVILLE – A Union City man was sentenced to nine months prison in Darke County
Common Pleas on Friday.

Kelvin E. Crawford, 52, went before Judge Jonathan P. Hein on a charge of aggravated
trafficking in drugs, a third-degree felony. A pre-sentence report revealed an extensive criminal
history that includes drug offenses, obstruction, DUI, breaking and entering, resisting arrest,
battery, and failure to appear.

Judge Hein also noted Crawford’s substance abuse history starting in childhood with no
treatment programs, something the defendant claimed he never considered.

Citing recent cases against Crawford were the result of his peers, Defense attorney Matthew
Pierron noted his client was “ignorant” of the resources available to help him.

However, Judge Hein pointed out that since the case got underway in June 2019, Crawford had
made no attempt at treatment, including failing to attend a Recovery and Wellness appointment
the previous week.

Crawford was sentenced to nine months prison with 45 days of jail credit, court costs, and an
order to pay $150 in restitution. He also faces a mandatory $5,000 fine.

Nicholas K. Deaton, 29, also made an appearance in court on charges of nonsupport of

dependents and receiving stolen property both fifth-degree felonies. He was sentenced up to 60
months of community control and court costs, and successful completion of a treatment program.
