ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
The new ultracentrifuge requires nominal line voltage of 180 to 260 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz,
fused for 30 amps. A 6-ft. (1.8-m) power cord with plug is attached to instruments
shipped within the United States and Canada. Instruments shipped overseas do not have
a plug attached, so a proper plug and receptacle must be procured locally. The IBM PC
controller requires line voltage between 100 and 120 Vac, 60 Hz or 220 to 240 VAC, 50
Hz and a multi-outlet surge protector or uninterruptable power supply.

Height (overall) 47.5 in. (1207 mm)
Width 37 in. (940 mm)
Depth 26.5 in. (673 mm)
Clearances 2 in. (51 mm) sides;

Locate the instrument in a clean, safe uncluttered environment. Be sure to provide a 2-in.
clearance on each side as the footpads extend 2 inches beyond the instrument. (The pads
have been designed to minimize possible rotation of the instrument in the event of a rotor
mishap.) A 6-in. clearance is required behind the instrument so the console can be tilted
back for servicing and also to ensure sufficient air circulation during operation. The
instrument will operate to specifications in an ambient temperature range of 15 to 40°C.
Beckman Coulter, Inc. does not provide warranty or guarantee proper operation of the
XLA or XLI if other than the recommended IBM PC controller system is used.
The PC controller required for the data collection and manipulation software provided
with the XLA has minimum requirements that must be met. Those minimum
requirements are:

A trained Beckman Coulter Field Service representative will install the XLA or XLI
(including the IBM PC). The information below is provided in case the system needs to
be relocated or reconfigured.
Note: Before uninstalling and relocating the instrument and PC controller ensure the
cable harness is disconnected at both the PC controller and instrument. Ensure the
monochromator is removed from the rotor chamber and boxed securely.
Electrical Requirements
Refer to the XLA and XLI Preinstallation instructions for power requirements.
The XLA and XLI optical systems power is completely contained within the rotor
chamber and instrument housing, and requires no additional power source.
An uninterruptable power supply outlet is recommended for the PC to avoid loss of data
during power interruptions; if this is not available, a multi-outlet power surge protector
should be used.
Space Requirements
The optical system of the XLA or XLI is completely contained within the Optima XL
rotor chamber and requires no additional space. Refer to the XLA and XLI
Preinstallation instructions for instrument space requirements.
The space requirements for the PC controller system are approximately 24" X 24" (61cm
X 61cm). The PC and printer are best located on the right side of the ultracentrifuge on a
computer stand, or on an approximately 4 square feet area of a table or bench. A 2-inch
space on the right-hand side of the ultracentrifuge must be maintained for access to the
circuit breaker located on the instrument side panel.
Bench or table space should also be available near the system for cell and rotor
preparation.
The rotor cell torque wrench must be securely attached to a lab bench to allow proper cell
assembly.
