DuraTech™ Provides Solution to Cement Drilling

3-3/4” DT4, Norwegian Section of North Sea

CHALLENGE: To drill through a cast iron bridge plug and
1,000 ft (300 m) of cement in a previously abandoned well
with a single bit on coil tubing at a respectable ROP.
Traditionally tungsten carbide flatbottom mills or PDC bits
are used for milling cement on coil tubing but can require
the use of multiple bits.

SOLUTION: Able to provide solutions to any drilling

dilemmas, Varel provided a DuraTech steel tooth bit to
accomplish this cement drill out. Designed with enhanced
DuraClad™ hardmetal that allows for a 20% increase in
hardmetal application and a patented heat shield ring
which acts as a thermal insulator to the seal from heat
generated in the bearing, Varel’s DuraTech line is able to This 3-3/4” DT4 complete with

longevity.

RESULTS: The 3-3/4” DT4 was able to complete the

1,036 ft (315 m) cement drill out at an average of 34.5
ft/hr (10.5 m/hr). After 30 hours of drilling at up to
450rpm, this DuraTech was pulled with the cement section
completed and effective seals. This bit amassed more
than 700,000 revolutions proving the durability of Varel’s
small diameter bearings. Additionally, the customer was
pleased with the size of returns for both evaluation and
disposal purposes. As always, Varel provides beneficial
solutions to any challenge.

Receiving a 1-2-WT-A-E-IN-NO-
BHA dull grade, this small
diameter DuraTech was able to
withstand all 1,000 ft of this
cement drill out.
