Word Ladders

- A game or puzzle where students change one word into another through a series of steps.
These steps can be anything from changing one letter to keeping one letter. Level of
difficulty can change depending on hints and words that are used for the ladder.

Word Ladders can be used as a fun way to practice Phonics, Spelling Patterns, and Vocabulary.

★ Appropriate for grades PreK-5th

★ Used for a warm-up, word works station, assessment of lesson, etc.

★ Used as individual work, group work, or whole class led.

★ Differentiate by providing word banks, partners, or doing it orally.

I chose this strategy because of its versatility. You can make it into whatever you need it to be.
For younger students, you can keep it simple and focus on phonemic awareness. For older
students, you can focus on vocabulary and target critical thinking skills. According to the book,
they match standards by applying grade-level phonics and analysis skills.
