TEACHING – LEARNING PROCESSES AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

The curriculum being defined as the TOTAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE implies

that the crux of the curriculum is the various planned and unplanned activities which
have been lived, acted upon or done by the learners with the guidance of the teacher.
With this in mind, the teaching and learning are actions necessary to accomplish a goal
in education.

A. Teaching as a Process in Curriculum

The teaching process is a series of actions.

1. PLANNING. This includes decisions about:

a. The needs of the learners
b. The achievable goals and objectives to meet the needs
c. The selection of the content to be taught
d. The motivation to carry out the goals
e. The strategies most fit to carry out the goals
f. The evaluation process to measure learning outcomes

2. IMPLEMENTATION
The teacher implements what has been planned. It is putting into action the
different activities in order to achieve the objectives through the subject matter.
This calls for a close relationship and interaction between the teacher and the
learner. Such interaction carried out using various teaching styles and strategies
is important in the accomplishment of the plan.

3. EVALUATION
This phase determines whether the plans and the subsequent implementation
are realized. 12 It should confirm the presence of a good match between the
objectives and the outcomes.

4. FEEDBACK
The feedback is a continuous process. It goes along with reflection. To give
feedback is to give information as to whether the three phases were
approximately done and reaped good results. Reflection is a process embedded
in teaching where the teacher inquires into his or her actions and provides deep
and critical thinking.

Some Basic Assumptions based on the Diagram:

1. That teaching is goal-oriented with the change of behavior as the ultimate end.
2. That teachers are the ones who shape actively their own actions.
3. That teaching is rational and a reflective process.
4. That teachers, by their actions, can influence learners to change their own thinking
or desired behavior.
