Gartner Hype Cycle: It is a branded graphical presentation developed and used by the American research,
advisory and information technology firm Gartner to represent the maturity, adoption, and social application of
specific technologies.

What Gartner Hype Cycle shows or proves?

It reduces the risk of a company’s technology investment decisions. It separates hype from the real drivers of a
technology’s commercial promise. It compares understanding of a technology’s business value with the objectivity
of experienced IT analysts.

Emerging Topic in Gartner Hype Cycle: AI PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service)

AI PaaS was first listed among AI trends that are “at the peak” of popularity in Gartner’s report, and it remains a
trend even a year later. Gartner’s underlines the efforts of Amazon (AWS), IBM (Watson), Microsoft (Azure), and
Google to provide comprehensive AI platforms as an alternative to separate AI services. So summarizing Gartner’s
lead, AIPaaS can be defined as a set of AI and machine learning (ML) platform services for building, training, and
deploying AI-powered functionalities for applications. Cloud vendors provide AIPaaS for those who want to
benefit from AI technologies without spending too much money, time, effort and even storage capacity on it. The
key hurdle to generalize a similar scheme of AIPaaS unlike classic PaaS is that there’s no generalized model for
AI PaaS yet. The market is still forming, and different vendors offer completely different sets of services under
the same umbrella term. Some common majority elements found in the AIPaaS platform are Infrastructure, Data
Storage, Pre-trained ML models, and AI APIs. There are three main benefits of implementing a third-party AI
service instead of building your own AI solution from scratch are Reduced costs and time, No need for a high level
of expertise, and, High scalability. The key disadvantages are Limited capabilities and Data compliance concerns.
According to Gartner, Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, and Google are the leading CSPs (Cloud Service Providers)
offering AI services. In general, these CSPs focus on three areas ML, Computer Vision, and, Language Processing.
AWS AI Services, Google AI Platforms, IBM Watson, Microsoft Azure AI Platform and recently Intel Software
started providing AI PaaS in the cloud. In conclusion, AI PaaS is an emerging trend on the AI market and an
umbrella term for a rich set of AI services provided by cloud vendors.
