TOPIC: Elaborating on the Influence of Gender on the Dimensions of communication

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Influence of culture in oral and written communication


2. Elaborating on the influence of culture on the dimensions of communication examples
3. Gender differences in verbal and nonverbal communication

Discussion:

Gender communication

Focuses on the social construct regarding the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits
typically associated with one sex.

Verbal /non Verbal Dimensions

Men

 Think they should be “macho” in language and action. They use assertive words and expect to
be understood.
 Men can talk about feelings, even cry like Christian pop singer Gary Valenciano.

Women

 Are expected to be non-confrontational in their language, especially men.


 Women can be loud and assertive like comedian and political activist Juan change, who does not
mince her words when it comes to politics.

Oral/written Dimensions

Women

 Then: Are supposed to be indirect and circuitous. That may well have been true in the days of
Maria Clara.
 Now: women write beyond what was once thought to be safe topics for women. Instead of
being soft spoken, they now speak with a directness exemplified by super star Nora Aunor when
the talked of Flor Contemplation, the Filipino nanny executive in Singapore, whom she played in
a movie.

Men

 He prioritizes productivity and efficiency in his daily life, and conversation is no exception
 He might wonder, “Why do women need to talk as much as they do?
Formal/Informal Dimensions

1. During a job interview

5. Address

Intentional/unintentional Dimensions

Filipinos loves to smile, and do smile a lot. However, the smiles express different emotions, not
just happiness but also nervousness. And sometimes it can lead to misconstrue.

Activity

The class will be divided into groups and each group will act out a scenario to show a
communication Activity that highlights one or pair of dimensions of communication. Freeze the frame
(or do a snapshot). The rest of the class will identify the dimension(s) that they see. The group will then
inform the class if their answer is correct or not.

Assignment

Using the class List of communication Activities, identify the dimensions of communication that
apply to each activity.
