Hydropower

Is a renewable energy source

that is derived from the
force or energy of moving
water.
INTRODUCTION
C
Hydropower is among the most effective innovation for producing
renewable electrical energy. It is considered as the most commonly
used renewable source of electricity amongst others. In fact based
on an article of the National Geographic, approximately 71% of all
the renewable electricity around the world is generated from
hydropower.
• A total of 159 countries in the world reported to have developed
hydropower. Here in our country hydroelectric power plants in the

Philippines are located in Pangasinan, Benguet, Laguna, Isabela,
Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Ilocos Sur, Bohol, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte,
Bukidnon, Davao del Sur, and Misamis Oriental.

G
Philippines has a 3,701 MW installed generating capacity and 3,473 MW dependable
generating capacity.
TYPES OF FACILITY

Impoundment facility

Diversion facility

Pumped-storage facility
IMPOUNDMENT FACILITY
This energy plant uses a dam to control the flow of water stored in
the reservoir. Gravity plays an important role in this kind of energy
plant because it causes the downward flow of water that will then
spin the blades of the turbine.
DIVERSION FACILITY

This type of plant does not uses a

dam but instead it uses series of
canals to cater the flow of the river
towards the generator-powering
turbines.
L
L PUMPED-STORAGE FACILITY
L
This plant creates energy by pumping the water from the reservoir
on higher level which is first gathered from the lower reservoir.
This kind of energy plant is like a cycle since the water is just
flowing from the higher reservoir to lower reservoir and the other
way around.
