EVANS TRIES AN O-LEVEL

Give an account of the blunders committed by the prison authorities.

 Prison authorities believed that they had made foolproof arrangements to foil any escape
efforts by Evans. There were quite a few loopholes which Evans used to his advantage.
 Hatching of the escape plan started with the German teacher. Nobody bothered to verify
his antecedents or their activities in jail.
 Allowing Evans to keep his bobble hat was a blunder.
 Had Stephens not been shifted the escape bid would have been foiled.
 The rubber ring should have been given a closer look.
 A thorough examination of the wounded man would have foiled the plan.
 Carter was complacent and the governor overconfident. The gov. should have personally
accompanied Evans after he was recaptured.
Character sketches:-
Mc leery

 Perfect accomplice with a razor sharp mind-cool composure during unexpected and
critical situations is commendable.
 Does not betray nervousness, remains unruffled during crisis.
 Has ready and convincing answers to counter eventualities.
 Exhibits right blend of anger and annoyance which flusters the officers when they find
the rubber tube.

Evans
 Quite a charismatic character-popular among jail inmates-has good network outside
prison too –capable of winning affection(Jackson has a soft spot for him& the governor
appreciates his innovative mind).
 Commendable presence of mind-is always ahead of the prison authorities has thorough
knowledge of the weak points of each of the prison officers and uses to his advantage.
 Devised meticulously and executed skillfully.

Governor
 Officer of average intelligence-overestimates himself.
 But he is conscientious and dedicated-apprehends that Evans will escape and takes
precaution.
 Does not try to understand Evans-a poor judge of character.
 Delegates work when he should have personally attended
 Shows intelligence in the location of the hotel.
 His own assessment that he is a good for a giggle gullible governor is correct.

Jackson
 Not intelligent enough to handle sharp witted prisoners like Evans.
 Not observant- fails to draw conclusion
 Delegates work to new recruit.
