REPORT ON REBOOT KERALA HACKATHON 2020-KOZHIKODE

Our state Kerala is known for the timely reforms and constructive interventions in the
education sector. To continue and reinforce this excellence,Additional Skill Acquisition
Programme (ASAP Kerala) is conducting Reboot Kerala Hackathon series with the
noble mission to rebuild the State by solving some of the pressing issues faced by the
departments under the Government of Kerala. The competition is open to students across
all the Higher Education Institutions in Kerala and they can participate in teams and come
up with innovative solutions through effective brainstorming and team work.

As we all know ,Hackathon is a 24-72 hour marathon of creating, building, producing


and delivering innovative ideas into a product or prototype within a short span of time by
Software or Hardware or both modes .Here technical skills, expression skills and critical
thinking skills are being measured at the same time.

The events are planned in 2 phases starting from January 2020. Each phase consists
of 11 Hackathons (10 regional hackathons and 1 Grand Finale). The event will act as a
platform to bring together the best brains in our Higher Education Institutions and
personnel from eminent industries.

The Hackathon theme for the district was “Transportation” and was conducted from 21 st
February to 23rd February 2020 at M Dasan Institute of Technology Ulliyeri, Kozhikode.
Students were given six problem statements related to the Transport Department.

The District Collector Sri. Seeram Sambasiva Rao inaugurated the event on 21 st February
at 8.30 AM. He, in his inaugural speech, appreciated the Additional Skill Acquisition
Programme for planning and organising such an event which helps to bring out-of-the-
box simple, cost effective ideas and innovations to resolve some of the daunting problems
in various departments of the state government.. The Collector also instructed students
to suggest simple and effective IT solutions for flawless parking and traffic management
near the beach road, Calicut. M-DIT chairman & Consumerfed Chairman Mr.
M.Mehaboob delivered the presidential address. He motivated the young and vibrant
mass to be a part of the government system by providing proper solutions for the given
traffic problems. ASAP IT Division Head Mr. V.V Vigil Kumar, MDIT Electrical and
Electronics Engineering Department Head Dr. O.Ashokan AND District Programme
Manager Ms. Mercy Priya addressed the gathering.

After the inauguration session, the competition began with 28 teams from different
Engineering ,Polytechnic and Arts and Science Colleges of Kerala. A total of 167 students
and 11 mentors participated in the hackathon at M-Dasan Institute of Technology

The Judging panel consisted of 18 jury members who were divided into 6 groups. Each
group included 3 panel members, one each from the technical,social engineering and
Transport Department. The Judging panel had the responsibility to mentor, monitor and
evaluate the teams at regular intervals during the 36 hours continuous process. Three
Programme Managers from ASAP and 6 Volunteers were exclusively assigned with the
judging panel to support the team .

Two Programme Managers and 10 Volunteers were assigned to look after refreshments
and food for the participants and other teams on all 3 days of the event . Continuous
refreshments were made available near the Hackathon venues. Comfortable rooms for
power nap were set on the same floor separately for boys, girls, jury and organizing
committee. Sick room ws also set on the same floor and a medical professional from
Primary Health Centre was made available all three days. Staff of M Dasan Institute of
Technology extended their whole hearted support for the smooth functioning of the event.

Line school of Designing; Sri . Edwin James , Chief HR VKC visited the venue and
appreciated the students and ASAP for the efforts taken for ensuring that our students
are updated with the day to day changes in technologies and the ever changing demands
of the global workplace .

The competition came to a close on Saturday evening at 8.30 PM. Presentations and
evaluation of all the 28 teams were conducted by the judging panel between 8.30 PM
and 11 PM . Results were published ,15 selected teams were asked to prepare for the
power judgement on 23rd at 8 am .

All the selected teams presented their ideas and findings before the 18 jury members and
industrialists.

The valedictory programme commenced at 12.30 PM Minister of Transport, Sri. AK


Saseendran presented cash awards to the winning teams.

Students of Saintgits College of Engineering who received the first prize at the event
developed an AI based security system to continuously monitor vehicle speed and its
location besides detecting mishaps and transfer of information to the nearest police
station and ambulance service.
The students of Christ college of Engineering who bagged the second prize developed a
simple mobile app to categorise roads as good, bad or very bad.An AI based virtual reality
driving training simulator which can be used at driving license training centres was
developed by students of Mangalam College of Engineering. They received the third
Prize.

Cash Prizes of Rs.50,000. Rs.30000 and Rs. 20000 respectively were awarded to the
winners.In his Valedictory address, the transport minister spoke about the advancements
in technology for the development of transport sector is crucial.He said the hackathon will
help in encouraging creative and innovative ideas which can be further endorsed by the
transport department.Welcome speech was given by ASAP IT Division head Mr. V V Vigil
Kumar. Presidential address was delivered by Mr. Purushan Kadalundi, MLA of
Balussery.Special address was given by Sri.Balram, Director MDIT.Felicitations were
given by Sri.Shaju Cherukavil,President Ulliyeri grama panchayat, Kozhikode RTO Mr
MP Subhash Babu,Roshan Kynadi Gen: Secretary Greater Malabar Initiative and MD
Kynadi Plantations, Sri Edwin James -Chief HR officer VKC Group,Arun Peeroli- CEO of
Qkopy, Sudeep M-Asst Professor, Dept of EEE, MDIT, Janishali KK, Hackathon officer
Dept of ME,MDIT. Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Vijayanand KS - Technical
