Academic Calendar 2017
Forewords
BIBM Academic Calendar is the roadmap of BIBM activities for a particular year. Every year
BIBM prepares Academic Calendar incorporating its regular Professional Development
Programs, Education and Research Programs. Calendar preparation process of BIBM starts with
the formation of Academic Calendar Committee comprising its faculties. The committee after in-
house consultation and examination of comments of last year’s participants, prepares a draft list
of the training courses, training workshops, research workshops, review workshops and research
projects etc. to be included in the Academic Calendar for the next year. Then the draft is finalized
in a Need Assessment Meeting with the participation of head of the training institutes, the HR
departments and other representatives of all member banks of BIBM. After finalizing the draft of
the Academic Calendar, it is placed before the BIBM Executive Committee. Accommodating the
recommendations of the BIBM Executive Committee, the proposed academic activities are
placed before the Governing Board for approval.
The activities of BIBM have been expanded and transformed over the years, specially over the
last few years. In the beginning, BIBM had to concentrate on training of the entry-level officers
due to absence of appropriate training infrastructure in the banking industry. However, with the
passage of time it assumed the responsibility of imparting training to the mid and senior level
officials of the banking sector. In the early nineties, the financial sector of Bangladesh underwent
a number of reform measures as part of structural adjustment in the economy. In response to these
reforms, the banking sector of Bangladesh demanded up-gradation of capabilities of managerial-
level officials as the banks expanded their horizon of operations. Practically, growing expansion,
cross-country linkages, and crises experiences have continuously been contributing and reshaping
and changing global banking activities. In line with that, BIBM regularly updates its training
areas, contents and methods. Especially, introduction of research based professional development
programs brought notable dimensional changes in the research activities of BIBM. And, by the
time these programs (Review Workshops and Research Workshops) received tremendous
applause of the banking community. Moreover, BIBM is working on building global networks.
BIBM has already launched a joint certification course on “Certified Expert in Risk
Management” with Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Germany. Moreover the
institute is in the process of introducing joint certification courses with EBTN (European Banking
Training and Financial Services Network).
In 1997, BIBM entered into education program through offering a post-graduate program in bank
management - the MBM. Initially, the program was conducted during day time. Later on,
responding to the demand from in-service professionals, MBM-Evening program was launched.
Initially the programs were run under CPGS (Center for Post Graduate Studies) affiliated with
National University. In 2012, University of Dhaka has given fresh affiliation to Dhaka School of
Bank Management (DSBM) to run MBM programs at BIBM. Beside training and education,
BIBM's current activities include undertaking research, organizing seminars and publishing
Since inception till December, 2016 BIBM trained a total of 82,513 officers of banks and
financial institutions, and in 2016, the number of attendees in training programmes was 5893.
Moreover, 1830 mid and senior level bankers took part in the Review workshop, Research
workshop, Seminar and research based/discussion programs. Further, 777 MBM graduates passed
out from BIBM during the period 1997-2016 and almost all of them have joined the banking
profession. Besides, 201 MBM-Evening graduates passed out from BIBM since inception in
2006. As part of consultancy services, in recent time, BIBM helped developing capacity of AIBF
(Afghanistan Institute of Banking and Finance) sponsored by the World Bank; and performed
Training Need Assessment for InM sponsored by DFID. The institute also organizes special
training programs and provides support in recruiting bank officials in response to the special
requisition of our member banks. In 2016, BIBM has also undertaken a number of joint research
and consultancy projects with GIZ, UNDP, AB Bank Limited, Agrani Bank Limited, University
of Dhaka and Bangladesh Bank.
Following the regular process of formulating Academic Calendar of BIBM, a draft Academic
Calendar was presented by the Academic Calendar Committee in the Need Assessment Meeting
held in November, 2016. The Academic Calendar of BIBM for the year 2017 has been approved
by the Governing Board for onward implementation.
I congratulate Academic Calendar Committee, faculty colleagues and the support team for
successfully accomplishing the task of finalizing the Academic Calendar 2017. Despite
consultation with the stakeholders, some of the training needs might remain unaddressed. BIBM
welcomes suggestions from all concerned for inclusion of unaddressed issues and further
improvement of its activities.

The Certification Course targets mainly to enhance capacity of the bank executives on risk
management constituting all key banking risks-credit risk, operational risk, interest rate risk, foreign
exchange risks, and liquidity risk. It is a program of nine months with two modules: first module is
offered online by the Frankfurt school; and the second module is delivered by BIBM in its own
campus. The initial response from the banking community is really encouraging. The first two batches
(first intake) for the course were enrolled in September 2015 and already completed Module A with
the Frankfurt School.
To start the journey of this Joint academic venture, the program was formally inaugurated by the
honourable Governor of Bangladesh Bank and Chairman of the Governing Board of BIBM Dr. Atiur
Rahman. We hope and believe that with the patronage and support of our member banks the program
would be able to deliver in bringing positive changes in the risk management practices of the banking
sector of Bangladesh.
