Understanding Philippine Dynasties

Political dynasties in the Philippines have perpetuated themselves through several means: (1) rent-seeking activities like those of the Lopez family; (2) political violence, as local bosses maintained control; and (3) extensive electoral networks, such as those of the Osmenas of Cebu. This entrenchment of political dynasties has led to negative effects including continued poverty, inequality, and corruption. The constitution prohibits political dynasties but efforts like term limits and anti-dynasty laws have had limited success in challenging established political families' hold on power.
