Plants & Green Alagae

 Plants are the decedents of green algae

o Green algae passed down chloroplast to plants
 Both have:
o Cellulose cell walls
o Chlorophyll a & b
o Starch= storage unit
o Cells w/ 2 anterior flagella
 How they differ:
o Plants have multicellular diploid & haploid stages = Alteration of Generations
o Plants develop from multicellular embryos

Adaptations of plants to life on land

Issues with life on land Adapatations

1. Land is dry 1. Waxy cuticle prevents plant tissues

2. Organic molecules & CO2 have to from drying out; vascular system
diffuse into chloroplast with little 2. Stomata allow gas exchange through
water loss cuticle
3. Embryo needs protections during 3. Female gametangium protects the
development developing embryo

Alteration of Generation
 Plants alternate btwn diploid & haploid organism
 Diplontic: diploid dominant
o Ferns, gymnosperms, angiosperms
 Haplontic: haploid dominant
o Bryophytes
