Reading Sample Test Items — Levels A, B, C, D For Insructional Use Only Purpose ‘The purpose of these sample test items i o familiarize students with CASAS reading items and give students aactce in taking a CASAS reading test They contain typical items students will encounter inthe Life and Work Reading Series, levels A, B, Cand D (Forms 81-188). Practicing with these sample test items should make future testing go more smoothly and may help reduce student test-taking anxiety. Use ‘The Reading Sample Test Items are not intended to be a predictor of any kind for any CASAS test, and should not be used for level placement or as an assessment of ability. ‘They cannot be used for standardized reporting of scores. They are meant only 10 familiarize students with CASAS testing. Use the sample test form appropriate fr your students sil level, ‘Testing ‘To use the sample test its in the classroom, download, print and copy the test booklets {or use by students. Answer sheets are also needed. Answer keys are on page 3 of these ‘TO ADMINISTER THS READING SAMPLE TEST ITEMS IN THE CLASSROOM Before testing 1. Make sure all testing materials ae ready: ‘+ Reading Sample Test Items booklets for Level A,B, Cor D (Staple the pages together) ‘+ TOPSpro Tes Record (Note: CASAS gives permission to duplicate the ‘TOPSpro Test Record for use only with these Sample Test ems.) + Pencils 2, Review the test materials to Famiirize yourself with them, ‘Testing 1. Allow adequate space between studens. (Even though the students are not taking ‘an actual fest, is important to simulate the testing environment.) Have students tum off their el phones. 2. Explain to students they will practice taking atest. Tell students there are two practice questions and five test questions, (Note: For the level D Sample Test Items there is only one practice item.) Then point out Test Column, number I: You wil mark your answers fo the fst questions here. 5. Hand out the tstbooklets and ask students not to open them until you tel them to. ‘Tel them not oie in the test booklets, 6. When everyone has test booklet and is eady 1o beg, tell tudents to open theit booklets. Point oxt the two practice questions. Explain that they will read the Selection and thes the question and answers, and will mark thee answers inthe Practice area of te answer sheet. Have them begin with the first practice item. 7. When most students are fnished with the fst practice item, give the answer and discuss the item. Then do the same with the second practice item. Show students again where they will mark the answers tothe test questions on their answer sheet (Test column, number 1). Tel them ta work by themselves ~ no talking, no helping one another. Have them begin. {When everyone I ished, discuss each tem, writing the correct answer onthe board. Collect the test booklets and answer sheets. You may discard the answer sheets.
