ESSAY TOPIC:

“Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a
new location. Even in the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the
regional average. It is the industrial center of the region, and historically it has provided more
than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios is attempting to expand
its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of
innovative technologies.”

The argument highlights Helios as the city of opportunity for corporations who are seeking
for new location. As an evidence, the author points out its low unemployment rate compared
to the regional average during the recession. Moreover, It states that Helios attempts to focus
on research and development innovative technology companies as a way of expanding its
economic base.

In other words, Helios might be profitable to those corporations that specialise in research
and development, but not to all the companies in general. In addition to this, the argument has
not stated any data regarding the labour forces as long as human resource is concerned.
Since it has been mentioned how low was the rate of unemployment, there is a chance that
those corporations who require high labours will find difficulties in establishing their
business in Helios. It might not be suitable to those companies which operate in large scale
nor the ones which are labour intensive. Therefore it will not bring much value in term of
employment in the city.
Despite the fact that it is the industrial center of the region, it has not provided any present
data to prove the accuracy of its share in the manufacturing sectors.

The author has only framed his conclusion based on three determining factors which are
unemployment rate, its industrial presence and its economic base. It has overlooked factors
like competition as well as legal and social constraints which play a very important role in
deciding the long term success of a business.

To conclude, this argument is not convincing as it stands. The author should have not
generalised corporations. As everything has its two sides on the coins, the author has simply
took the positive side into consideration and overlooked the negative part which might be
harmful if not studied properly before any decision making.
