Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Representation: Students are able to choose any book they would like to present as long as it is on grade
level. They can also use the presentation software that they are able to best use.
Action and Expression: Students will express their knowledge and enjoyment of their book by presenting it to
the class. They are also given feedback by their peers and able to do a narrated presentation after.
Engagement: Students are able to choose a book that best fits their interest, and then recommend it to
others who may share the same interests.
Lesson idea implementation: Students will complete a digital book report presentation on any book they
like, as long as it is on grade level. They can use either PowerPoint or Google Slides, whichever is easier for
them to access. Students can add extra slides if they would like, but must have the following 6 slides:
1. About the author
2. a short story summary
3. Analysis of the main character
4. Challenges the characters face
5. Theme of the book
6. Would you recommend this book to a friend?
Students will present their finished book report to the rest of the class on a predetermined presentation day.
After presenting and receiving feedback for the teacher and peers, students will make and needed changes.
Then using the voice feature, they will narrate their presentations and send them to the teacher. These can
then be posted on a class or school blog as “Books we Love!” to share with parents, students in other classes,
or other schools.

Reflective Practice: I feel this activity is great for showing students understanding of finding theme and
analyzing character in a text. It also does a great job of introducing students to the features of PowerPoint
they have probably not used yet, but will in the future. An extension could be students using a different form

of technology to present, such as a timeline, or a Prezi. A limitation would be that not every student is
comfortable with presenting to the class, so proper audience edicate could be something the class could go
over.
