Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Representation: Students will be shown a video, have instructions explained to them orally, and be able to do
their own research for the activity. This provides multiple ways the students can gain an understanding of the
importance of World War Two.
Action and Expression: Padlet offers a variety of ways students can make their timeline unique and
presenting it to their peers allows them to express the information how they best see fit.
Engagement: Students will be creating their own study guide as a group they can use later on end of the year
tests.
Lesson idea implementation: To start the lesson, the teacher will show students a BrainPOP discussing
general knowledge on World War 2. Students will then be split up into groups of 3-4 and be given a topic from
the selection of Pearl Harbor, War in the Pacific, The Holocaust, War in Europe and D-Day. Along with each
topic will be a list of Newspaper headlines from World War Two. The students job is to research their
headlines and put them into chronological order, using Padlet’s timeline feature. Along with each headline
should be a short sentence or two about the topic discussed in the headline, and a picture that matches as
well.

After each group has finished their timeline, they will share it with the teacher so they can access it. The
groups will then go up and present their timeline to the class, explaining the significance of each event and
why it was a major headline. After Each group presents their timeline, the other students will add the events
to their own group’s timeline. At the end of the lesson, each student should have a timeline with all the
important events of World War Two. This gives every student access to a student made study resource they
can use for testing at the end of the unit, or the year.

Reflective Practice: I feel this lesson gives students multiple ways of gaining the information needed for the
content standard including videos, on their own research, and peer presentation. It also gives students a
study guide that will mean more to them because they made it together as a class in a fun activity.
