Course Code : MAT2001 Course Name : Statistics for Engineers
1. The following sample data were collected to determine the relationship between two
processing variables and the current gain of a certain kind of transistor:

Diffusion time 1.5 2.5 0.5 1.2 2.6 0.3 2.4 2.0 0.7 1.6
(Hours) 𝑥1
Sheet resistance 66 87 69 141 93 105 111 78 66 123
(( − 𝑐𝑚)𝑥2
Current Gain y 5.3 7.8 7.4 9.8 10.8 9.1 8.1 7.2 6.5 12.6
Fit a regression plane 𝑦 = 𝛽0 + 𝛽1𝑥1 + 𝛽2𝑥2 and use it to estimate the expected current
gain when the diffusion time is 2.2 hours and the sheet resistance is 90  − 𝑐𝑚. (Data

2. In a certain industrial facility, accidents occur infrequently. It is known that the
probability of an accident on any given day is 0.005, and accidents are independent of
each other. What is the probability that in any given period of 400 days, (i) there will
be an accident on one day (ii) there are at most three days with an accident (iii) will
pass without any accident?

3. In an examination it is laid down that a student passes if he secures 50% or more marks.
He is placed in A or B or C or D or E grades according as he secures marks between
80% and 90% or marks between 70% and 80% or marks between 60% and 70% or
marks between 55% and 60% or marks between 50% and 55% respectively. If he
secures 90% or more marks, he gets S grade. It is noticed that from the results 10% of
the students failed and 5% of them obtained S grade. Assuming normal distribution of
marks, what percentage of students placed with B grade?

4. A manufacturer of lenses is qualifying a new grinding machine and will qualify the
machine if the percentage of polished lenses that contain surface defects does not
exceed 2%. A random sample of 250 lenses contains six defective lenses. Formulate
and test an appropriate set of hypotheses to determine if the machine can be qualified
(Use 5% level of significance).

5. A company claims that its light bulbs are superior to those of its main competitor. If a
study showed that a sample of 40 of its bulbs had a mean lifetime of 647 hours of
continuous use with a standard deviation of 27 hours, while another sample of 40 bulbs
by its main competitor had a mean life time of 638 hours of continuous use with a
standard deviation of 31 hours, does this substantiate the claim at the 0.01 level of
significance?
