Phase one: Planning

What is the problem you are investigating?

-We are studying the salinity, temperature and turbidity of 3 different
water sources at Valencia National High School.

What do you know about this from personal experience and from science?
-Different levels salinity, temperature and turbidity define the health
of people who drink it. Salinity, temperature and turbidity affect the water
quality of a certain water source.

What variables may affect the phenomenon you are investigating?

-The water quality and water source would greatly affect the investigation
the researchers are doing.

Which of the variables are you going to investigate as your independent

variable (this is where the variable you will change to see what affect it has on
the dependent variable)?
-Water source

How will the independent variable be change in the experiment?

-The researchers will get a sample of water source in selected buildings in
Valencia National High School and measure the water in terms of turbidity,
salinity and temperature.

What is the dependent variable?

-The water quality
How will you measure the dependent variable?
-The researchers will use Nuelog Sensors to detect the water qualities
(turbidity, salinity and temperature) needed for the investigation.

What question are you investigating?

-What are the water qualities in different water sources in VNHS? What
would be the significance of the collected data?

OR

What hypothesis are you testing? State your hypothesis as a relationship

between the independent and dependent variables.
-
Predict what will happen. Explain why.
-The researchers predict that there would be minor difference on the
water qualities of the water samples since all are commonly used for cleaning
and other purposes.

What variables are controlled to make it a fair test?

-We consistently gathered 3 samples per water source so there would no
bias in terms of collecting data.

Describe your experimental setup using a labelled diagram and explain how
you will collect your data.

Are there any special safety precautions?
- There are no special safety precautions given in this investigation.

Phase two: Experimenting

Carry out some preliminary trials. Were there any problems?

- We did some preliminary trials on the equipment we used (Nuelog

Sensor) but before we accomplished the preliminary trials, we had to
find another reliable cable for the equipment to work.
How did you modify your experiment to fix the problems?

- We did not modify our experiment. Thus, we only change the cable for
the usb module.

Collect and record the data you need to test your hypothesis. Draw your data
table here.

How did you make sure your data were accurate?

- The investigators used Nuelog Sensors to accurately measure the

different water qualities on the water samples.
Phase three: Data analysis

What is the best way to present your data? Is it appropriate to draw a graph?
What type of graph is most suitable?

Analyze your data. Are there any patterns or trends in your data? What is the
relationship between the variables you have investigated? Is the hypothesis
supported by the data?

Using science concepts explain the patterns, trends or relationship you have
identified in your data. What is your conclusion?

Draw graph on this page.

Title:
Phase four: Evaluation
What were the main sources of experimental error (sample size and selection,
measurement error, poor control of variables)?

- There was error on the measurement of the water samples collected

by the investigators.

How confident are you with your conclusions? How much uncertainty/ error is
associated with your data?

- We are very confident with our conclusion. The only errors in the
investigation are the unequal measurement of the water samples.

How could the design of the experiment have been improved to reduce error?
- The water samples should be measured equally to ensure lesser error in
the investigation.

What have you learned about the topic of your investigation? Was the outcome
different from your prediction? Explain.

- Various levels of salinity, turbidity and temperatures affect the water

quality of a certain water source.
