Entry of Europeans:
Entry of Europeans to the country started with the establishment of the spice
trade in the 1400’s when several European countries set up trading posts and
colonial towns in the country. Portugal, the Dutch Republic, Denmark, France,
and England all had a significant presence in the country beginning as far back
as the 1400’s (Portugal). It was England, however, that held the longest power
in the country. After 1858, the British held colonial power after taking it from
the East India Company which had been ruling since 1757.
Mahatma Gandhi is perhaps the most widely recognized figure of the Indian
Nationalist Movement for his role in leading non-violent civil uprisings. He first
employed the non-violent approach in South Africa where he was serving as
an expatriate lawyer. He was hurt and angry when he witnessed discrimination
and exploitation of colored people under Whites rule. He organizes non-violent
protests in the country which gained him fame and support from the people
of South Africa. In 1921, he became the leader of the Indian National
Congress, a nationalist political party in India, which demanded

nondiscriminatory laws, equal rights for men and women, peaceful inter-
religious relations, overthrow of the caste system, and above all, Indian
independence. During his lifetime, Gandhi carried out three major
nationalist movements which are discussed below.
On March 12, 1930, protesters took part in the Dandi March, a campaign
designed to resist taxes and protest the British monopoly on salt. Gandhi began
the 24-day, 240-mile march with 79 followers and ended with
thousands. When the protesters reached the coastal town of Dandi, they
produced salt from saltwater without paying the British tax. This movement
prompted nearly a year of civil disobedience, illegal salt production and
purchase, boycotts of British goods, refusal to pay taxes, and the
imprisonment of approximately 80,000 Indians. The movement earned
national and international attention.
The Quit India Movement began on August 8, 1942, during World War II. The
India Congress Committee, under the urging of Gandhi, called for a mass

British withdrawal and Gandhi made a “Do or Die” speech. British officials
acted immediately and arrested nearly every member of the Indian National
Congress party.
The nation once again entered mass civil disobedience marked by anti-war
speeches and refusal to assist in the war efforts. This movement introduced
the idea to the British that they might be unable to maintain control of India.
At last, on August 15, 1947, India gained independence from British rule.
However, independence came at a huge cost. Hindus and Muslims who had
fought side by side against the united enemy now had to be separated.
On June 3, 1947, British rulers proposed an Act to separate British India into
India and Pakistan. Thus, the hard work, sacrifice, and willpower of Indians led
to the freedom of India from British rule.

By definition, a nutrient is any substance that is absorbed and either provides you with energy or
enables growth, repair or proper functioning of your body. There are seven main classes of
nutrients that the body needs. These are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre
and water.
It is important that everyone consumes these seven nutrients on a daily basis to help them build
their bodies and maintain their health. Deficiencies, excesses and imbalances in diet can produce
negative impacts on health, which may lead to diseases. This list of nutrients, their sources,
constituents and deficiency diseases will help you prepare for the Competetive Examination.

Transport System in India
Transport in India
Transport or transportation is the movement of humans, animals and goods from one location
to another .Modes of transport include air, land(rail & road),water, cable, pipeline and space.
Railways
Railways was introduced to India in 1853, when a line was constructed from Bombay to
Thane covering a distance of 34 km.
The total length of Indian Railways network is 64460 km. (March 2011).
Indian Railways system has been divided into sixteen zones (as shown in the map given
below − the lines shown in different colors illustrate the regions of respective zones).
India has three system of railways − broad gauge (the distance between rails is 1.676
meter); meter gauge (the distance between rails is one meter); and narrow gauge (the
distance between the rails is 0.762 meter or 0.610 meter).
Konkan Railway constructed along the western coast in 1998, is a landmark achievement
of Indian Railway.
Konkan Railway is 760 km long rail route connecting Roha in Maharashtra
to Mangalore in Karnataka.
Konkan Railway crosses 146 rivers, streams, nearly 2000 bridges, and 91 tunnels.
Asia’s largest tunnel which is about 6.5 km long, is constructed on the Konkan railway
route near Ratnagiri in Maharashtra.
The gauge-wise route and track lengths of the systems as on 31st March, 2007 are as under:-

Road
With a total length of about 42.3 lakh km, India has one of the largest road networks in
the world.About 85% of passenger and 70% of freight traffic are carried by roads.Sher
Shah Suri built the Shahi (Royal) road to strengthen and consolidate his empire from the
Indus Valley to the Sonar Valley in Bengal. This road was later renamed as the Grand
Trunk (GT) Road during the British period, connecting Calcutta and Peshawar. At
present, GT Road extends from Amritsar to Kolkata. It is bifurcated into 2 segments − (a)
National Highway (NH)-1 from Delhi to Amritsar, and (b) NH- 2 from Delhi to Kolkata.
Roads have been classified as National Highways (NH), State Highways (SH), Major
District Roads, and Rural Roads.
Page 3
Transport System in India
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is an autonomous body under
the Ministry of Surface Transport was operationalized in 1995.The main roads
connecting two or more states are constructed and maintained by the Central
Government. These roads are known as the National Highways. The NHAI is responsible
for the development, maintenance, and operation of National Highways. The National
Highways constitute only 1.67 per cent of the total road length, but carry about 40 per
cent of the road traffic.
State Highways are constructed and maintained by the state governments.

State Highways 1,28,000 km

Waterways
Water transport can be divided into two major categories − inland waterways and oceanic
waterways.

km, including islands.Roughly 95% of India’s foreign trade by volume and 70% by value
moves through ocean routes.
Ocean transport is the most important water transport, because it has certain advantages
over land carriage. The sea offers a ready-made carriageway for ships which, unlike the
roadway or railway, requires no maintenance.
Water surfaces are two-dimensional and, although sea-going vessels frequently keep to
shipping lanes, ships can travel, within a limited number of constraints, in any direction.
Air Ports
Air transport in India marked its beginning in 1911 with the commencement of airmail
over a little distance of 10 km between Allahabad and Naini.
The Airport Authority of India is accountable for providing safe, efficient air traffic,
and aeronautical communication services in the Indian Air Space.
Pawan Hans is the helicopter service operating in hilly areas and is widely used by
tourists in north-eastern regions.
The coastline of India is dotted with 12 Major Ports and about 200 Non-major Ports. The
Major Ports are under the purview of the central while the Non-major Ports come under
the jurisdiction of the respective State Governments.
The 12 Major Ports (including the Port of Ennore which is a corporate port set up under
the Indian Companies Act, 1956) are evenly spread out on the Eastern and Western coast.
The ports of Kolkata, Paradip, Viskhapatnam, Chennai, New Mangalore, Mormugao,
Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru at Jhavasheva and Kandla are on the Western Coast. The
capacity of major ports have increased from 20 Million Tonnes per annum (MTPA) 1951
to 504.75 as on 31st March, 2007.
Sea-Ports
At present, India has 12 major ports and 185 minor or intermediate ports.
Page 5
Transport System in India
The 12 major ports handled about 71 per cent of the country’s oceanic traffic in the year
2008-09.
The capacity of Indian ports increased from 20 million tons of cargo handling in 1951 to
more than 586 million tons in 2008-09.
Kandla Port located in the Gulf of Kachchh, on the west coast of Gujarat has been
developed as a major port.
Kandla port is specially designed to receive large quantities of petroleum and petroleum
products and fertilizer.
Mumbai has a natural harbor and it is the biggest seaport of the country.
Pipelines
Oil and gas industry in India imports 82% of its oil needs and aims to bring that down to 67% by
2022 by replacing it with local exploration, renewable energy and indigenous ethanol fuel (Jan
2018).
The Space Transportation System (STS), also known internally to NASA as the
Integrated Program Plan (IPP), was a proposed system of reusable manned space vehicles
envisioned in 1969 to support extended operations beyond the Apollo program. (NASA
appropriated the name for its Space Shuttle Program, the only component of the proposal
to survive Congressional funding approval).
The purpose of the system was twofold: to reduce the cost of spaceflight by replacing the
current method of launching capsules on expendable rockets with reusable spacecraft;
and to support ambitious follow-on programs including permanent orbiting space
stations around the Earth and Moon, and a human landing mission to Mars.
Page 6
Types of Election s in India
There are different types of election systems in the world. We can classify these into two types:
1. Majoritarian systems
2. Proportional Representation Systems
Article 324 to 329 of the constitution provides the framework for electoral system in India.
Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by adult universal suffrage and a first-past-the-
post system.
The maximum strength of the House envisaged by the Constitution is 552. This may
include up to 530 members from the states, up to 20 members from the Union
Territories. The president can nominate two members from Anglo-Indian community.
The 95th Amendment Act, 2009 extended the period for further ten years till 2020.
Direct Election
Territorial Constituency
Readjustment of constituencies after each census
Reservation of seats for SCs and STs
Direct Election:
The members of Lok Sabha are elected through direct election by the people. Every
citizen of the country, who is more than 18 years of age, can vote in the election
irrespective of his/her social status, religion, caste, race etc.
Page 1
Types of Election s in India
Territorial Constituency:
Each state is divided into territorial constituencies for the purpose of elections. One
member of Lok Sabha is elected from each constituency. That means, the number of seats
for the election are equal to the number of constituencies.
After every census, there may be a need to read just the constituencies; as the delimitation
is based on population and not on area.
The constitution provides for reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and
Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the Lok Sabha. The 95th Amendment Act, 2009 extended the
period of reservation for further ten years till 2020.
As per the 87th Amendment Act, 2003, the number of seats to be reserved for the
Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha
shall be on the basis of 2001 census.
Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of Parliament, which cannot have more than 250
members. Members of Rajya Sabha are not elected by the people directly. They are
elected by the members of the legislative assemblies of the states in accordance with the
system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.
Twelve members of the Rajya Sabha are nominated by the President, who has earned
distinction in the fields of literature, art, science and social service.
Rajya Sabha is a permanent body. It is not subject to dissolution but one-third of its
members retire after every two years. At present, Rajya Sabha comprises of 245
members.
Page 2
Types of Election s in India
Article 102 of the Constitution lays down the disqualifications for being chosen as, and for
being, a member of either House of Parliament:
Direct Election: The legislative assembly is composed of representatives of the people chosen
by direct election on the basis of the universal adult suffrage. The maximum strength is fixed at
500 and minimum strength at 60.
Nominated Member: The governor can nominate one member from Anglo-Indian community
if, in his opinion, the community is not adequately represented in the House.
Territorial Constituencies: Each state is divided into territorial constituencies for the purpose
of elections. One member of legislative assembly is elected from each constituency.
Readjustment after each census: After each census, a readjustment is to be made in the total
number of seats in the legislative assembly of each state and the division of each state into
territorial constituencies.
Page 3
Types of Election s in India
The total number of members in the legislative council of a state having such a council shall not
exceed one-third of the total number of members in the legislative assembly of the state.
However, in no case, the strength of the legislative council shall be less than forty. The actual
strength of a council is fixed by the parliament. The composition of legislative council is partly
through indirect election partly through special constituencies and partly by nomination.
Page 4
