What is genetics?

Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation,
and heredity in organisms. Though heredity had been observed for millennia, Gregor
Mendel, a scientist and Augustinian friar working in the 19th century, was the first
to study genetics scientifically.

What is heredity?

Heredity, also called inheritance or biological inheritance, is the passing on of traits

from parents to their offspring; either through asexual reproduction or sexual
reproduction, the offspring cells or organisms acquire the genetic information of
their parents.

What is genes?

In biology, a gene is a sequence of nucleotides in DNA or RNA that encodes the

synthesis of a gene product, either RNA or protein. During gene expression, the
DNA is first copied into RNA. The RNA can be directly functional or be the
intermediate template for a protein that performs a function.

What is chromosomes?

A chromosome is a deoxyribonucleic acid molecule with part or all of the genetic

material of an organism. Most eukaryotic chromosomes include packaging proteins
which, aided by chaperone proteins, bind to and condense the DNA molecule to
prevent it from becoming an unmanageable tangle.

What is DNA?

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule composed of two chains that coil around
each other to form a double helix carrying genetic instructions for the development,
functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses.
