ROLE PLAY

(The patient enters the room)

Qaanitah : Good afternoon. How are you?

Dhiaul : I’m alright

Qaanitah : that’s good. I’m Qaanitah and I’m your doctor. What’s your name?

Dhiaul : I’m Dhiaul

Qaanitah : okay, Dhiaul. How old are you?

Dhiaul: I’m 18 years old

Qaanitah : Okay, so what seems to be the problem?

Dhiaul : I don’t quite know, Doc. But I’ve been feeling so tired lately and my throat is sore. When I
woke up this morning I felt a bit dizzy and wouldn’t stop coughing. I was cold so I checked my body
temperature with my thermometer at home and it showed that my body temperature was 38
degrees celcius.

Qaanitah : Ah, I see. Are you working? Or do you have any physical activities daily?

Dhiaul : No, I’m not working. I’m an active college student. Talking about activities, I think I have
pretty busy one. The class starts at 8 in the morning and ends in the afternoon. After that, I have
activities in the campus and I go home around 7 pm. After that, I’ll do my assignments.

Qaanitah : Wow, you’re very busy. Do you sleep and eat regularly?

Dhiaul : Well, I finish my assignments around 12, and I don’t directly go to sleep right after. I sleep
around 1 in the morning, and I have to wake up at 5, so I don’t think I get enough sleep. And lately I
lost my appetite, I skipped breakfast and dinner, but I still consume some fruit, like banana.

Qaanitah : Okay. How long have you been feeling this?

Dhiaul : Today is the fourth day.

Qaanitah : you mentioned that your throat is sore and you can’t stop coughing. Do you have
difficulty in swallowing and breathing?

Dhiaul : yes

Qaanitah : Have you taken any medication?

Dhiaul : Yes, I’ve taken paracetamol, because I had headache this morning along with flu.

Qaanitah : Okay. I need to recheck your body temperature and check your throat, if you don’t mind

Dhiaul : of course, but why do you need to check my throat, doctor?

Qaanitah : I’m going to perform a throat swab on you. I need to make sure whether if it is a sore
throat or strep throat. It will help me decide which medication that you should take upon.

Dhiaul : Oh, okay

(The doctor prepares for the equipments needed)

Qaanitah : Can I take your temperature now, Dhiaul?

Dhiaul : Sure, go ahead.

Qaanitah : I’m going to place this between your armpits. Do you mind placing your arm across your
chest for me?

Dhiaul : I can do that.

Qaanitah : Alright, I’m going to wait for a while and then I can check the reading.

Dhiaul : Okay

Qaanitah : I’ll have a look now. It’s 38.4, it’s quite high. How do you feel at the moment?

Dhiaul : I feel chilly

Qaanitah : that’s because you’re cold. Now, I’m going to need you to tilt your head back and open
your mouth.

Dhiaul : like this?

Qaanitah : yeah

(after some time)

Qaanitah : Alright, it’s done. I’m going to send this to the lab to see the results.

(a few moments later)

Qaanitah : Based on the result it shows that the test is negative, that means you have viral sore
throat. This type is caused by viral infection. This does not need an antibiotics treatment.

Dhiaul : Oh, okay. So what are the medications that I’m going to take?

Qaanitah : looking at your health records, I think it’s fine if I give you ibuprofen. You have to
consume 3 pills per day and each are consumed after meals.

Dhiaul : Doc, do you mind if you write down the receipt for me because I want to buy the medicine
by myself

Qaanitah : that’s fine, let me write it down for you then

Dhiaul : Okay, thank you doc

Qaanitah : Also, you should drink more water, get enough sleep for 7-8 hours per day, and loosen
your activities. Of course you have to be more careful for your health

Dhiaul : Oh, okay Doc.

Qaanitah : If you still feel unwell in a period of 1 week, you can come here again.

Dhiaul : Alright. Thank you Doc.

Qaanitah : get well soon!
