a. is the process of estimating the future sales volume, the rate of sales and
the rate of delivery.
b. Floater is used to handle in the garment industry.
c. determines the sequence of assembly, a list of the steps in the
production process.
1+1+2=4
3. Select the most suitable answer

I. In which of the following layouts, the lines need to the balanced

A) Process layout
B) Product layout
C) Fixed position layout
D) Plant layout
II. Using the assembly-line balancing procedure, which of the following is the required
cycle time if the production time in minutes per day is 480 and the required output per
day in units is 50?
A) 0.104
B) 50
C) 9.6
D) Cannot be determined from the information above
III. Using the assembly-line balancing procedure, which of the following is the theoretical
minimum number of workstations if the task times for the six tasks that make up the job
are 4, 6, 7, 2, 6, and 5 minutes, and the cycle time is 10 minutes?
A) 3
B) 6
C) 8
D) None of the above
IV. When balancing an assembly line, which of the following is not a way to reduce the
longest task time below the required workstation cycle time?
A) Upgrade the equipment
B) Assign a roaming helper to support the line
C) Split the task between two workstations
D) Speed up the assembly line Material Handling System
E) Use a more skilled worker
V. Using the assembly-line balancing procedure, what is the required cycle time if the
production time in minutes per day is 2,400 and the required output per day in units is
1,200?
A) 1 minute
B) 2 minutes
C) 3 minutes
D) 4 minutes
VI. If there is a task in an assembly line which takes 30, but the cycle time of the assembly
line has to be 20 seconds, then which of the following is the most appropriate thing to
do?
A) Split the task
B) Use parallel work stations
C) Redesign
D) A and B only
E) A, B and C
VII. The correct sequence of operations in production planning and control is
A) Routing-Scheduling-Dispatching-Follow up
b) Scheduling-Routing- Dispatching-Follow up
c) Dispatching-Routing-Scheduling- Follow up
d) Routing-Scheduling-Follow up-Dispatching
VIII. Which of the following is true for ‘Routing’?
A) It is flow of work in the plant
B) Route sheets include list of machine tools that are to be followed
C) It depends upon material handling facilities
D) All of the above
1X8=8
4. Match the following

i. Eton a. progressive bundle

ii. Bundle ticket b. Modular Production
iii. Horse shoe shape c. UPS
iv. Tree shape d. Sub-Assembly Line
1+1+1+1=4

5. All Apparel Production Systems do what they were intended to do very well. Identify (put \/
mark in the corresponding cell) in this table below, which manufacturing conditions each
production system is best suitable for:

Part B

6. Discuss (within 50 to 150 words) any four.

a) Sub contracting vs. In-house manufacturing
b) Costs and benefits of production control
c) On standard time and Off Standard time
d) Operator Performance and Operator Utilization
e) Maximum and potential capacity

9. Discuss the four activities of production planning and control

Part D
10. If 7200 T- shirts must be made in 5 days (attended hours = 480 min per day), then what is
the required output in garments per hour? If work content is 15 sm. Then, what is the
required output in SM/hour?
If predicted attendance is 90%, predicted utilization 80%, predicted average operator
performance 95% and floater performance 60%, then how many operators and how many
floaters are required to execute the order?
2+2+6+5 = 15

11. While setting a line, the production target is set as 12 bundles per hour. If for the
consecutive operations A and B, the work contents per bundle are 5 min and 15 min
respectively. Then what should be the starting lag time between operation A and B?
If the buffer between operations to be maintained are 12 bundles, then what should be
starting lag time now between operation A and B?
5+3=8
