ACTIVITY # 7 (Online activity)
A. How did the event change Rizal’s views?
Rizal’s early ideas of independence were just political freedom and autonomy. If Spain would
loosen their grip, Filipinos can consider ourselves as an independent. However, he withdrew this idea and
realized that the Spaniards would never compromise. The death of the Gomburza hit close to Jose Rizal’s
heart because one of the priests, Padre Burgos, was considered to be his brother’s close friend. Their
deaths opened his eyes to the reality that total independence is what the country needs. Putting an end to
the Spanish colonialism would lead the Filipinos to freedom.

B. Why did Rizal dedicate the El Filibusterismo to the GOMBURZA?/B

C. Why was the GOMBURZA execution an IMPORTANT event in Rizal’s life? Why did Rizal
dedicate the El Filibusterismo to the three Filipino priests?
The death of the Gomburza awakened the Filipino people of the cruelties that were happening
around them. Their martyrdom marked the birth of nationalism in our country, fueling the public’s anger
and resentment towards the Spanish government. Following their death, propagandists formed an
organization that would inflame a broader movement of nationalist revolts. If it weren’t for the
Gomburza, Jose Rizal might have taken a different direction with his book. By dedicating El
Filibusterismo to the priests, Rizal was able to continue on the fight of enlightening the society and
bringing the Filipinos closer to the truth. Jose Rizal was able to expose the unjust treatment at the hands
of the Spanish authorities.

D. According to Rizal, who will continue the objectives that were started by the Secularization
movement? How did he describe them?
Gomez, Burgos and Zamora used their knowledge and education to fight for reforms that would
break the dominance of the Spanish government. They spearheaded the secularization movement which
aimed to elevate the plight of Filipino priests. Unfortunately, they were sentenced to death, disabling them
to continue with their mission. Yet with that, their deaths sparked the awakening of national
consciousness. Great minds like that of Dr Jose Rizal emerged to put a stop to the madness set forth by
the Spaniards. Rizal, along with other Filipino ilustrados, formed an organization called La Solidaridad
that sought for representation in the Spanish government. Their actions inspired Filipinos to act and
explore horizons that would move them towards progress.

E. What are the objectives/aims of the reform movement?

The reform movement was formed to overthrow the supremacy. Its emergence can be traced back
to the agony Filipinos felt under the abusive and cruel Spanish government. The main goal of the
propaganda was to achieve assimilation with Spain. The reformists wanted to seek legalization of Spanish
and Filipino equality to allow both parties to enter government service, allowing Philippine representation
in the Spanish parliament. They also pushed for the recognition of human rights, abolishing the polo y
servicios and forced sale of local products to the government. Furthermore, the reform movement pushed
for the secularization of the clergy and the creation of a self-governing public school system.
