Cellphone is a device combination of Telephone and Radio with access to a cellular radio system without a physical

connection to a network.

First Cellphone, named as DynaTAC8000X was invented by Martin Cooper, Sr. Engineer at
Motorola in April 1973. It used to take 10 hours to charge for 30 min talk-time and weighted 1.1Kg.
Continuous innovation and improvements resulted in modern cellphones.
- 1G used Analog Signals, offered first wireless communication at a very low bandwidth (2kbps). It offered no
internet.
- 2G used Digital Cellular (GSM - Global System for Mobile communications)
- 3G offered faster communication and internet. Mainly known as upgrade to GPRS and CDMA technologies.
- 4G is current generation, offered high speed internet and communication using VoLTE, WIFI.
- 5G is upcoming technology offering fastest internet and communication.
Cellphone emits out signals to the tower for device recognition. The radiations come into the phone and are
emitted out as well. Thus, the Cellphone Users are exposed to a form of electromagnetic radiations called radio
frequency energy, also known as RF from the give and take of signals between the cell phone and the tower.
Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is a measure of the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when
exposed to a radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic field. It is defined as the power absorbed per mass of tissue and
has units of watts per kilogram (W/kg).
SAR level beyond 1.6 W/kg is dangerous for humans. We should not use the device having SAR level higher than
this.
Holding a phone away from the body or using a wired earpiece lowers the amount of radiation absorbed, and text
messaging rather than talking, further lowers that amount.
Cellphones are good as they help us to stay connected and enable us to communication in emergency. Modern
cellphones offers much more facilities using fast internet like online shopping, online banking, etc. One can book a
cab, train, flight tickets at a fingertip within few seconds. It saved our lot of time and energy.
However, its adverse impacts far outweigh to the benefits. Mainly due to the technology it uses – Radio Waves that
emits Electro-Magnetic Radiation which is peril for humans. Research says, everyday 30 min talk would pose 40%
more chances to have brain tumor. There are many other ill impacts…
Avoid carrying mobile near to body (i.e. in pockets)
Use your cellphone on loud speaker or with a wired hands-free
Put your phone on “Airplane mode” when not in use
Avoid using cell phones in cars, elevators and trains
Keep mobile phones away from you when you are asleep
