The power train has a transmission that is a countershaft transmission. The transmission is controlled
by an ECM in order to provide smoother shifting. The power train has an optional all wheel drive that
provides increased traction and control.

Power from the diesel engine (1) is sent from the flywheel to the torque converter (2). The torque
converter (2) bolts to the engine flywheel with a flex plate connection. The torque converter is
fastened to the transmission (3) with splines on the torque converter hub. Power flows directly from
the torque converter to the transmission input shaft. The gears on the input shaft mesh with the gears
in the transmission in order to provide power to the output shafts of the transmission.

The transmission output shaft transfers power through the drive shafts and universal joints to the front
differential (4) and rear differential (5). The bevel gear and pinion of each differential sends the power
through the differentials and sun gear shafts to the final drives. Axle shafts transmit the power from
the final drives to the wheels. An integral parking brake is mounted on the front of the transmission.

The modulating control valves (23) direct oil from the transmission hydraulic pump to the speed and
direction clutches in the transmission (3). The transmission has six clutches that are engaged
hydraulically. The clutches are released by spring force. The axles are equipped with hydraulically
engaged inboard brakes.

Switches in the transmission direction and speed control lever (17) inform the machine electronic
control module (ECM) (14) of the direction that is selected by the operator and of the speed that is

selected by the operator. The ECM energizes the solenoids on the modulating control valves (23).
This is done in order to engage the correct clutches for the selected speed and for the selected
direction.

The direction of the machine is manually changed by the operator with the transmission direction and
speed control lever (17) or the direction of the machine is manually changed by the operator with the
transmission direction control switch (15) (if equipped).

The transmission direction and speed control lever (17) is a two-function lever. Speed selection is
made by twisting the lever. The selection of FORWARD direction or of REVERSE direction is made
by moving the lever toward the front or toward the back. When the transmission direction and speed
control lever is centered, the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

Move the transmission direction and speed control lever (17) into position (6) for FORWARD travel.
Move the transmission lever into position (7) for the NEUTRAL position. Move the transmission
lever into position (8) for REVERSE travel.

The transmission will automatically shift to the highest speed that is selected on the transmission
direction and speed control lever (17) when the transmission is in the autoshift mode.

The transmission direction control switch (15) (if equipped) is located on the lift control lever.

Move the transmission direction control switch (15) into position (6) for FORWARD travel. Move the
transmission direction control switch into position (7) for the NEUTRAL position. Move the
transmission direction control switch into position (8) for REVERSE travel.

The machine can be equipped with an Autoshift transmission control. The Autoshift switch (9) allows
either manual operation or autoshift operation. The Autoshift switch also has an VARIABLE SHIFT
CONTROL (VSC) position which allows the transmission to shift at lower speeds.

The downshift switch (10) (if equipped) is located on the lift control lever. The downshift switch is
used to downshift the transmission manually. The downshift switch can be used when the machine is
in any of the modes of operation.

The machine ECM (14) communicates with the engine ECM (28) through the CAN data link (27).
The machine ECM also communicates with the Caterpillar monitoring system control (12) and the
data link connector through the CAT data link (11). The machine ECM can communicate with a
personal computer through the service connector (13). The machine ECM transmits information to the
dash panel cluster (26). The engine ECM also transmits information to the dash panel cluster (26).
The backup alarm (21) is activated by the ECM whenever the transmission is shifted to the
REVERSE position.

The machine ECM uses information from the transmission neutralizer override switch (16), the brake
pressure sensor (29) and the parking brake switch (19) in order to provide the proper output to the
modulating control valves (23) and the dash panel cluster (26). The intermediate speed sensors (20),
the transmission oil temperature sensor (24), the torque converter output speed sensor (22) and the
output speed sensors (25) also provide input to the ECM in order to provide the proper output to the
modulating control valves.
