The JET Programme Japanese Language Courses were

established to assist JET participants in their study of Japanese.

Studying Japanese is important for living and working in Japan.

Contracting organisations also expect JET participants to study
Japanese to the best of their ability. Participation in the Japanese

evaluations.

２．COURSE OVERVIEW
PURPOSE: For participants to acquire the basic Japanese language skills necessary to
communicate at their work places and in their daily lives.
PARTICIPATION FEE: Free
PERIOD OF STUDY: 6 months from the start
TEACHING MATERIALS: Online course (Japanese and English) at the following site:

An e-mail account and access to the internet are required.
A smartphone app is also available for more in-depth study, such as grammar quizzes
and vocabulary meanings and usage.
COURSE LEVELS
Beginner: For participants who can read Hiragana and Katakana. It is recommended that JET
participants study “Japanese for JETs” prior to taking the Beginner course.
At the end of this course, you can expect to have reached a level equivalent to
approximately level N5 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
Intermediate: For participants who can engage in basic daily conversation, and read and write short
sentences using basic kanji and vocabulary.
At the end of this course, your level will be approximately equivalent to level N4 of the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
Advanced: For participants who can engage in daily conversation, and read and write text using
standard kanji and vocabulary.
At the end of this course, you can expect to have reached a level equivalent to
approximately level N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
Note: Information about the Translation and Interpretation Course will be sent to your
contracting organisation at a later date.

The Placement Test is designed to help you determine the level of your Japanese.
Please use the level check test to help decide which course to take.
Unit Test: Ensure that you take the Unit Tests at the end of each Unit. You can take the test as
many times as is necessary to achieve the passing score (70 points). You can check
your test results on the study site (LMS).
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION: A Certificate of Completion will be issued to those who study all lessons and pass all
Unit Tests with a score of 70 points or higher. (You can print out your own Certificate
of Completion.)

Study site (LMS) E-learning program containing videos on grammar (theory), conversation practice
for practical settings and quizzes that allow learners to check their
comprehension.
Smart Words Smartphone and tablet app containing about 4,000 words that comprehensively
phone App covers verb conjugations, honourific forms and pronunciation.

Grammar App containing about 1,800 fun quizzes with easy touch-and-drag operation on

Standard schedule

There are 6 Units in each Course. It is recommended that you complete 1 Chapter per week and 1 Unit per
month, which is the standard schedule. Additionally, there are 4 Chapters in each Unit, and several (3 to 5)
Lessons in each Chapter.

As outlined below, if you register by the tenth day of any given month, your course will begin on the first
day of the following month. It is also possible to register for a course before arriving in Japan.

Placement Test, which is recommended for those who are not sure which course to select. To take the
Placement Test, log in to the site below. Please note that the course level you sign up for is not automatically
determined by the results of the placement test. You must choose your desired course level via the Contact
Information Survey for JET Programme Participants website.

６．PREPARATION
Take the following steps before you start the course.
On your first day of the course, you will receive your login ID and your password at the e-mail address you
registered via the Contact Information Registration Site. Go to the study site (LMS) and check if you can log in.
The login ID is vlj-jetXXXXXXXXXXX, the password is your date of birth (YYYYMMDD). XXXXXXXXXXX refers
to your 11-digit JET number starting with 20.

This course is designed to study Japanese using the study site and the smartphone application. For detailed
instructions of the study site, see the LMS Operation Manual in the Tutorial on the study site.

①Search for “VLJ” in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
②Download VLJ Grammar and VLJ Words.
③Start the application and log in with the ID and password that you received via e-mail. The application
does not allow you to change your password.
Once your ID and password are successfully entered, the files required for the course will be
downloaded, which usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Note: WiFi is recommended, as a large amount of data must be downloaded.

８．FINISHING A UNIT
①Be sure to complete all chapters on the study site (LMS). If you study the chapter, a "completed" mark will
appear on the study site. Both "completed" marks in each chapter and 70 points or higher in Unit Test are
required to pass each Unit.

Q1: How do I apply for a course?

A: Access the Contact Information Survey for JET Programme Participants online form at
https://goo.gl/u1gVT2 and register there.

Q2: I don’t know whether my application has been accepted.

A: You will receive an e-mail entitled “Your Japanese Language Course will start today!” on the first day
of your course (please refer to page 6). Your login ID and password will be in the e-mail. If you do not
receive the e-mail on your first day of the course, check the Contact Information Survey for JET
Programme Participants online form and contact the Help Desk of the study site (LMS). You can also
consult with your contracting organisation supervisor.

Q3: I have not received an e-mail about starting the course. What I should do?
A: Check your e-mail settings to ensure that you can receive e-mails from the domain “@nttls.co.jp.” For
specific information on how to change your e-mail settings, please check with the e-mail service
provider.

Q4: Can I take multiple courses?

A: No, you cannot take multiple courses at the same time. Please move up to the next course level after
you finish your current course. If you want to apply for the next course, please register for the course
via the Contact Information Survey for JET Programme Participants online form at
https://goo.gl/u1gVT2

Q5: I couldn’t apply for the course before the deadline. Can I still apply after the deadline?
A: Yes, you can. Applications submitted after the deadline will move to the next course scheduled to
open. If you submit your application for a Japanese Language Course before the 10th of any month,
your course will begin on the 1st of the following month.

Changing / Canceling Course

Q6: Can I quit halfway through the course?
A: Your contracting organisation expects you to work on improving your Japanese proficiency. Learning
Japanese also helps you improve the quality of your work and life in Japan. Please consult with your
contracting organisation supervisor if you think there are no other options but to quit the course. If
there are extenuating circumstances and you are forced to withdraw from the course, you must submit
a Statement of Japanese Language Course Non-Completion to CLAIR through your contracting
organisation supervisor.

Q7: I have finished one course. What should I do to start the next course?
A: Access the Contact Information Survey for JET Programme Participants online form at
https://goo.gl/u1gVT2 and apply for a new course. Please understand that after starting a new
course, you will no longer be able to access the course you have finished.

Q8: I would like to change the course level. What should I do?
A: Tell your contracting organisation supervisor that you would like to change the course level. When your
contracting organisation has approved the change, access the Contact Information Survey for JET
Programme Participants online form at https://goo.gl/u1gVT2 and apply for a new course. If you submit
your application for a Japanese Language Course before the 10th of any month, your course will begin
on the 1st of the following month. Please understand that after starting a new course, you will no longer
be able to access the course you have finished.

Q9: I cannot log in to the study site (LMS).
A: Your login ID or password may be wrong. Check your ID and password and try to log in again. If you
still cannot login, contact your contracting organisation supervisor.

Q10: Can I change my password for the study site (LMS)?

A: Yes, you can. Log in to the study site (LMS), go to the Environment Settings box, and choose
“Change Password”.

Q11: I forgot my login ID and password for the study site (LMS).
A: Click “Click here if you forgot your user ID or password” on the log in screen of the study site. Enter
the same e-mail address as the one registered on the Contact Information Survey for JET
Programme Participants Form and click the “Next” button. Your login ID and password will be sent
to you via e-mail.

Q12: I don’t know how to use the study site (LMS).

A: Log in the study site and then go to the Tutorial, where you can find the LMS Operation Manual.

Q13: Can I change the language of my course?

A: Please note that grammatical explanations and the PDF textbooks are only provided in English.
You can however change the study site’s interface settings to English, Japanese, or Chinese.

Q14: What are the cards displayed in the textbooks and videos?
A: The Japanese Language Courses use the Ezoe Method, which expresses Japanese words through
cards. In the Ezoe Method, cards of different colors and shapes are used to categorise words. Colors
express parts of speech, and shapes express conjugation. For more information, please refer to the
tutorial.

Q15: I am having trouble with the quizzes freezing up.

A: In some cases, this problem can be solved by clearing your Internet browser history (cache). As the
steps necessary to clear one’s cache vary between Internet browsers, please look up how to clear
the cache for the browser you are using.

Q18: I cannot log in to the application.
A: Your login ID or password may be wrong. The password you need to access the application is the
same as the one you use for the study site (LMS). Your login ID is vlj-jetXXXXXXXXXXX, and your
password is your date of birth (YYYYMMDD). When the course starts, you will be sent your login ID
and the password to the e-mail address you have registered. Note that even if you change your
study site password, the application’s password will remain as your date of birth.

Q19: Can I change the password for the application?

A: No. You cannot change the password for the application.

Q20: No search results are found with the key word “VLJ” on my iPad.
A: Set the search condition to “iPhone” on the App Store and then enter “VLJ” in the search box.

Q21: I don’t know how to use the application.

A: Log in to the study site (LMS) and then go to the Tutorial, where you can find the Manual for the VLJ
Words App and the Manual for VLJ Grammar App.

Other
Q22: I am planning on return to my home country for the holidays. Can I continue the course from
outside of Japan?
A: Yes. As it is an e-learning service, you can continue to take the course from outside of Japan if you
have Internet access.

Q23: I sent a question to the Help Desk but I haven’t received a reply yet.
A: The Help Desk will reply to your question within 5-10 business days. If two weeks have passed, the
reply may not have reached you. Register the “@nttls.co.jp” domain so that e-mails can be
successfully delivered. You can check the reply from the Mentoring Box on the study site, too. Log in
to the study site to check if the reply has arrived.

Q24: My e-mail address has changed. What should I do?

A: Update your information on the Contact Information Survey for JET Programme Participants online
form at https://goo.gl/u1gVT2.

Q25: I received an email notifying me of the completion deadline for a Unit. What should I do?
A: E-mail reminders are sent automatically through the study site (LMS) according to your progress in
the course. The course schedule is set up so that you complete one unit in a month’s time, so please
do your best to finish each unit according to this schedule.
