Reflection: Little Man Tate

Each one of us deserves to be treated equally. Despite all our differences and
some exceptionality, living the world the way we like is what everyone deserves.
Equality has become a problem today especially to people with disabilities.
Just like the movie Little Man Tate which shows a story of a child named Fred
Tate. He is a young boy who is extremely gifted. However, he finds himself lonely and
isolated. He doesn’t have friends because of his exceptionality. His mother, Dede Tate is
aware of this and she tries to help him to live his life like how a typical child enjoys
childhood.
In Fred’s case, I can see that the world is so unfair for him. He wasn’t treated
the same as how normal children were treated. His exceptionality made his world
marginalized and set him limits in living his life. Fortunately, Jane Grierson recognizes
his potential and understands Fred’s mind. Jane has become Fred’s mentor and
provided him opportunities to develop more.
As a future educator, it is a very big challenge for all of us to handle students
especially if they come in diversity. We need not just to focus on one strategy, instead,
we should be open for multiple strategies in order to unlock a child’s potential and help
them grow. Moreover, we should come to think of becoming an epitome of an
individual who accepts people fairly amidst diversity.
Let us treat people equally and see the beauty of diversity just how we live with
concept of multiculturalism in our institution. Acceptance of others’ exceptionality does
not end here; it should be carried in our life-long journey.
