Multiplying fractions is the easiest one of all, just cancel all like terms then multiply the
numerators together, and the denominators together.

ICE BREAKER/BRAIN TEASER
A man has to take a wolf, a goat and some cabbage across a river. His rowboat has enough space
for the man plus either the wolf or the goat or the cabbage. If he takes the cabbage with him, the
wolf will eat the goat. If he takes the wolf, the goat will eat the cabbage. Only when the man is
present, the goat and cabbage are safe from their enemies. All the same, the man carries the wolf,
goat and cabbage across the river. How?
Explore
Students will be asked to recall multiplication of fractions. The example below will be placed on
the board and students will suggest possible ways to simplify.

Explain
Students will be given an opportunity to explain their thoughts. All misconceptions will be
cleared.
Elaborate
An example that involves exponents will be placed on the board and students will be guided
through the process with the aid of questions.
r2 x s
s2 r

Dividing Fractions
To divide fractions, first "flip" or “invert” the fraction we want to divide by (divisor), then use
the same method as for multiplying:
