Along the way, the team was required
to complete physical and mental chal-

They both completed that race while

TACTICAL WALLS IS BACK WITH
NEW WAYS TO KEEP YOUR WEAPONS
Tactical Walls is an
American-owned and

out of the Shenandoah

by Tim Matter and Chris Wood. It pre-
dominantly uses U.S.-made parts rather
than importing foreign-made materials,
and everything it offers to the market is

The organization opportunities with
the MODWall don’t stop there. Tactical
Walls also allows you to completely
design your own MODWall package. I
ordered four MODWall panels for this
article because I wanted to demon-
strate the versatility of these cool
products. I think of the MODWall as
something like a cross between Tetris
and Legos for grownups. They also
make for a pretty sweet backdrop for
the photographers out there.
When navigating around the Tactical
Walls website, you will find all sorts
of neat stuff for the MODWall, such
as vest hangers, right- and left-facing
pistol and rifle hangers, large and
small shelves, shotgun and rifle racks,
flashlight hangers and a whole host of
other innovative accessories. One of
my favorite accessories is the “Hide-
A-Mag.” It’s a rare-earth magnet that
will not only hide a magazine, but will
also hold a small pistol. It can attach
to the MODWall or be installed under
a cabinet, on the back of a headboard
or wherever else you think you need
easy access to a concealed weapon.
As long as you don’t have little ones
running about, it’s entirely possible to
use the Hide-A Mag to stash a heater
in every room.

For a suppressor, I chose the VBS

Designed for AR-platform rifles, it mounts

the most attractive can on the market,

Federal’s 185-grain Gold Medal Berger

to the chase and say that the rifle was
extremely accurate with all three.

Overall, Colt did a great job with this retro

century of history and combined it into a quality
rifle—as Colt should have, given its long history

FN 15
MILITARY
COLLECTOR M16
n 2015, FN launched a new line of rifles that

I would go “from the front lines to your collec-

tion.” The company’s Military Collector Series
includes civilian-legal versions of the M16, M4 and
M249 SAW. Here we’ll focus on the M16.
Like Colt, FN has a rich history of providing
quality firearms for the military. Its first M16 contract
began in the fall of 1988 when the company under-
bid Colt by almost $60 per rifle. At the time, Colt had
built more than 5 million M16 rifles; the initial FN
contract called for more than a quarter-million rifles.
Staying true to the iconic M16 design, FN’s
retro rifle features specs very similar to Colt’s retro
offering. It too has a 20-inch barrel with a 1-in-7-
inch twist rate, a 39.5-inch overall length, a fixed
buttstock and an A2 front sight.
There are some differences, however. FN’s rifle
does not have a detachable carry handle rear sight.
Instead, it has a flat-top receiver equipped with a
flip-up rear sight. The front handguard is different,
too. Instead of the traditional round handguard
seen on the Colt, FN’s rifle ships with a Knight’s
Armament M5 RAS handguard with rail covers.
In the end, FN’s goal with this line of weaponry
is to bring civilian-legal versions of the “world’s
most iconic products to America’s gun owners.”
The company’s Military Collector series offerings
do exactly that. (fnamerica.com)

and forget about everything your old
range sergeant taught you in Basic.
One of the first and most noticeable
features you see on this rifle is the 27
series stock, which immediately conjures
up pleasant thoughts of exotic locales
such as Maryland, Massachusetts and
California. One would assume the pri-
mary purpose of the missing pistol grip
would be to allow sales in places that
prohibit them, admittedly one of the driv-
ers behind the 27s, but that’s only part of
the reason behind the very spacey stock.
Besides the non-pistol-grip profile, the
billet-machined 7075-T6 aluminum design
also helps reduce the rifle’s height (when
used with a short magazine), and to make
it adjustable for length of pull on the
shoulder, along with a movable cheekrest,
to set up the rifle for an individual shoot-
er’s physique. The entire buttplate is
also a separate component, movable up
or down, again to tailor the stock to the
shooter. It looks ungainly as a unit, but
it’s quite functional in use. And the grip
angle and trigger reach are deliberately
designed to be quite similar to what you
find in a traditional wood-stocked hunting
rifle. Once you get past the aesthetics,
and recalibrate your head after years of
AR tradition, it’s perfectly doable.

LAKE CITY
A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK
AT HOW SMALL-ARMS AMMUNITION
IS MADE FOR THE MILITARY
BY FRED MASTISON

In a world where the old is replaced by the new at an almost unmea-

surable pace, it’s refreshing to find something that has survived this
obsession. One such pillar of consistency is the Lake City Army
Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Missouri. Founded in 1940, Lake City
is the single largest producer of small-arms munitions used by the Department
of Defense. Organizationally, the LCAAP is government owned but contractor
operated by Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, formerly Orbital ATK. While
the name “Lake City” is well known in the shooting and reloading realms, there is
a great deal more to the facility than most people know.
Earlier this year, one other writer and I were honored to be the first journalists
ever to tour the facility. With this distinction, however, came security measures
that make a visit to the Pentagon seem like a trip to a Quickie Mart. Ammunition
production is serious business, and the staff at Lake City are equally as serious.

After picking it up, I was shocked to find
that, not only was it still in one piece, but
it only had a few new scratches. So, I
did the only logical thing I could think of
at the time. I had my wife put the Jeep in
reverse and run the sight over again while
I watched in amazement. The results
were the same. To be quite honest, my
wife looked like she was having entirely
too much fun running over the sight.
After another trip to the range to
check the zero, I had to declare it legally
deceased. The windage was just fine,
but all of my shots were hitting low
despite having the elevation topped out.
First, it’s reasonable to assume most
other optics would have been utterly
destroyed by this point. Second, the
mount was slightly bent. Since I didn’t
have a spare mount available, I was
unable to discern if it was actually the
sight or the mount at fault. With a bit of
Kentucky windage, this thing could have
still been in the fight, as the red dot was
still bright and crisp. Either way, this
sight took one hell of a beating, all while
still working exactly as intended.

it quickly became one of my favorites.

Creedmoor variant for testing.
Machined from a solid billet of
aluminum, the chassis is minimalist in
comparison to earlier chassis systems.
This rifle’s slim M-LOK forend not only
reduces overall weight, but it also feels
good in your hands. A Picatinny rail is

Another major feature is that the

AR-platform rifle, and Savage includes a
FAB Defense GL-Shock buttstock. This
stock can easily be adjusted for both
length of pull and comb height. Another
noteworthy aspect of the chassis is that
it uses an AR-style pistol grip.
One of the benefits of the chassis
system is that it allows the Stealth to use
detachable box magazines, and Savage
wisely chose to make the rifle compatible
