COLEGIO NOSSA SENHORA DA ASSUNGAO ENGLISH WRITTEN EVALUATION - 10th Form I Read the following text attentively: CANADA Canada has a reputation for being the United States’ boring neighbour, but sur- veys keep rating it as the world’s most desirable country to live in. For the last seven years, Canada has come top of the United Nations list of the most highly-developed countries, and recently Vancouver was chosen by the Wil- liam Mercer consultancy as the city with the highest quality of life. BUT ISN'T IT REALLY COLD? You could say that. The far north of the country spends most of the year below freezing. with temperatures sinking to a chilly 30°C. However, you have to remember that Canada is huge — in fact, it’s the second largest country on Earth. So although the North can be unbearably cold, some of the country is much mil- der. Ninety per cent of Canada’s population lives near to the Southern border with the US where summer highs can reach a pleasant 30°C. But it would be fair to say that if you're after a winter holiday, Canada wouldr’ t be a bad place to start. SO ARE CANADIANS REALLY INTO THEIR WINTER SPORTS? Winter sports are pretty big in Canada. Ice hockey is their national sport, and curling is also popular (that’s the strategy game involving throwing granite rocks and slipping around on the ice). It’s also the place to be in terms of crosscountry skiing, ice skating, dog sledding and snowshoe racing. After all of that, you can get your breath back whilst trying your hand at ice sculpting. ICE SCULPTURES? ‘And why not? The only drawback (other than the necessarily frosty working conditions) is that all the hard work is doomed to melt away as soon as the beauty of it. You can see ice sculpture on a grand scale in Quebec, as the Canadian Ice Hotel, a huge building made entirely from snow and ice. The idea began in Swe- den, but Canadians too now have their own seasonal get-away — the perfect place to chill out! 1S THE SCENERY REALLY THAT GOOD? Well, Canada is home to mountains, forests, lakes, grassy plains, and even a small desert. Niagara Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world. It is truly spectacular, with millions of litres of water crashing over the 50m drop every second. In the snowy North for much of the year you can see the dazzling Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. This is the Earth’s natural light show, where an array of colonred lights dance accoss'the darkened'sky. So yes, it really is that good. A. Are these statements true or false?
