General Safety and Precautions
Overview
Safety should always be first and all precautions should be taken prior to
handling the machine. Keep in mind that this machine does contain oils and
greases that may cause the parts of the machine to be slippery. Always keep
safety in mind and wear proper safety gear (helmets, glasses, gloves etc.)
Materials testing Prior to moving,
Materials testing machines are meant to replicate motions, forces and speeds operating, installing,
that may potentially be dangerous. Always be knowledgeable and aware. Read servicing or
all relevant manuals and guides. Your best precaution is to understand the otherwise handeling
machine and have a good understanding of how things operate. machine always refer
Frame to the manuals.
When handling the frame keep in mind the frame is constructed of very heavy metals and
parts. The ST-1000 weights approximately 70kg. Please keep safety in mind whenever moving the frame.
Computer and software control system
The computer and software is used to control the test and operator should always keep in mind that any
changes in the software will change the way the tests are carried out and may affect
6
Introduction
This manual was created for the purpose of training and instructing the user/operator. The person(s)
operating the machine is asked to always keep safety in mind. The person(s) responsible for operation and the
employers of operators take the responsibility of any damages or injuries due to mishandling or wrongful
operation. Unless otherwise stated; Salt Co., LTD. is the manufacturer of this machine and cannot be held
accountable for mistakes or damages caused by miss-use of the machine.
If there are any parts of the manual that are unclear, we advise for the operator to contact us directly.
Care should be taken at all steps. Prior to receiving, moving and installation the operator is responsible for a
safe work environment, safety gear and proper checks (electrics, pressure, temperatures etc.).

Application
Salt Co., LTD. Universal Testing Machines are manufactured on an order made basis. Depending on the type of
tests required we accommodate to the customer by Standard, test method, material etc.
ST-1000
Compression test Tensile test Bending test
Keeping test Holding test
Shapes: Flat, round, cylindrical, tubular etc.
Materials: Soft materials such as – but not limited to – Textiles, plastics, polymers, rubbers, films, wires and
strands etc.
INSTALLATION
When initially installing the ST-1000 all that is required is the correct connections. Make sure all power
switches are off prior to connection to a live outlet. Make sure to check balance of the machine and its
foundation, the machine should not move or sway during the test as this would deem the testing zone unfit
for most standards. If any questions arise or if customer is unsure, stop and contact Salt Co. LTD or supplier
directly. Safety should always come first when operating machinery.
Receiving
Unless otherwise agreed upon; When receiving the ST-1000 will come in a wooden crate. When taking the
machine out of the crate, be mindful not to cause damage or to induce shock to the machine. The machine
has very sensitive measurement devices which can be damaged if roughly handled.
Frame
Handling the frame should be done with the upmost care. The machine is heaviest at the base near the
column. The machine can be lifted by the bottom base by hand (3~4 persons) or by fork lift. Do not support
the weight of the machine by its column as the column cover is not a structural point.
Electricals and connections
Behind the frame a “Main Power” slot and switch is located. Connect the AC 220V cord into the machine and
to the outlet for main power source.
12
Behind the indicator:
Control Load Cell
Main Power
Extensometer
RS 232C
Remote
Main Power
This is the power source which is derived from the frames main power source. Use the switch to turn the
indicator on and off when not in use.
Control
This is the connection to the Mitsubishi Servo Motor. This is the line for the control output from the indicator
to the motor
Remote (RS 232C)
This is the connection to the remote (CPU or remote software.) The RS 232C connection should always be
checked to make sure it has a stable, tight connection. This port is the input from the software to the indicator
and the output data to the CPU/Software.
13
Load Cell
This is the direct connection to the load cell of the UTM. The connection should always be checked to make
sure it has a stable and tight connection. Any noise coming from the other connections may cause disruptions
to the load cell.
Extensometer
This is the connection for the extensometer accessory. Input only from accessory.

Adapter
The adapter is to make a secure connection it the grip via adapter pin
Push pin
The pin is to fix the grip in place and to secure the grip into the adapter
Tightening bolt
The tightening bolt is used to tighten the grips firmly in order to reduce and movement and backlash. Always
tighten the tightening bolt via hexagon tool to ensure a reliable test with less backlash and movement in grips.
Grip
The grip may be changed according to the sample specimen or test required.
15
Installing grips
Adapter without any grips installed
Slide grip into place and fix with push pin
16
Secure tightening bolt by turning by hand at first and then with hex wrench
To uninstall grips reverse the steps afore mentioned.
1) Release tightening bolt
2) Pull out push pin
3) Slide out grip

In case of RS-232C failure
The computer to indicator connection is by RS-232C, but in case of RS-232C slot card failure utilize the
USB converter.
Utilizing the RS 232C to USB converter
1) First install the drive with the USB to RS232 Converter CD
RS-232C to USB converter
2) Next access the “Device Manager” by right clicking “This PC” then selecting “Properties”
Select “Device Manager”
18
3) Right click the newly converted “USB PORT x” and select “Properties”
4) Under the “Port settings” tab click the “Advanced” button.
19
5) Set the “Latency Timer (msec):” option to 1
20
Change RS 232C to USB settings on software
1) Right click “This PC” and click on properties, then access the “Device Manager” tab
2) Check the WINDOWS Device Manager. Identify the USB Port # under PORT to match the software
information. (In this case “COM3”
3) In the software > Input the master password to change the communication port no.
21
4) Test Config -> Device : Edit [COM No. #] to match (COM#) under Device Manager
[ie. COM3 = COM NO. 3] and the ”Baud rate” (Make sure the baud rate matches on the indicator

Operation
Overview
The software is used to operate the machine and to record and analyze the data from the tests.
The software functions as the main controller to the unit. All the presets and calibrations are recommended
and if any settings are to be changed, the operator is responsible for any changes in operation, data recording
or overall health of the software and machine.
Prior to operating
Always check to see if all wires are connected securely. One should never operate machinery under the
influence of any medication or drugs that may cause them to be less than optimal condition. Never operate
this machine without proper training or the appropriate safety gear. Read the manual(s) prior to operation in
order to avoid any unnecessary hardships and to avoid injuries. There are interchangeable grips and other
components other than the machine itself. Always check your surroundings and testing area before operating
this machine.

Test information shows you the readings or input data of the test and the sample. All inputs
must be input properly in order to operate the test properly. These change after selecting test
method and inputting information in the test number icon.
3. Cylinder Control.
Allows you to move the cylinder up or down at various speeds in order to properly set up
before a test and to return the cylinder to neutral position after tests.
4. Zero
Allows for zeroing or tare the readings. Operator should zero the reading before test. Before
tensile testing the readings will read negative due to chuck movement. In this situation only
zero the displacement.
5. Range and Speed options
Allows for max test range selection (100%~10% of max capacity). And testing speed input
options.
6. Displacement Select
Displacement may be read by either the actuator or the extensometer. The actuator is the
position reading and the extensometer is the accessory attached to the back of the frame used
to measure gauge length (both readings will be shown on #7).
7. Real Time Data
Displays real time data. Whether test is running or not, these numbers will change accordingly.
8. Test Graph
Graph of data from test(s). Real time graph is drawn as well as viewing previous test data. There
are two optional tabs for two different graphs, relative graph and time graph. The units of the
graph (x axis and y axis) may be changed to operator’s choice.
