Course Title : Basics of Engineering Dated: 25-08-19
Course Code : 19BEX01 Course Structure : 3-1-0-3 Course coordinator : Instructor(s) : Course Description : This lab course is a supplement to the theory course Surveying. The lab work is mainly field work oriented and includes locating given objects like building, trees, street poles etc. and preparation of drawing. During the lab course students get involve in taking linear and angular measurements namely for ground objects and prepare plotting. Also the students will have an opportunity to get familiarize to different surveying instruments along with choice for specific applications in the field of surveying. Variety of instruments ranging from conventional to modern are operated during lab course. The instruments are categorized based on ease of use, accuracy desired and application for complex conditions. OUT COMES: At the end of the course the student will gain 1. Understand the principles of surveying and building materials and components 2. Understand the working principle of steam, Gas, Diesel, Hydro-electric, Nuclear Power plants and IC Engines 3. Understand the working principle of vapour compression & vapour absorption refrigeration systems, Window and Split type AC systems 4. Illustrate the behavior of basic electric circuit elements for both DC and AC excitation 5. Outline the construction and working principle of DC machines with appropriate safety measures 6. Understand the operation of sensors for engineering applications Unit I Surveying, building materials and components Surveying principles, measurements of distances and areas. Building Materials: Bricks, stones, sand, cement, steel and concrete. Substructure: safe bearing capacity, foundations and types. Superstructure: stone and brick masonry, beams, columns, lintels, roofs, floors, plastering Layout of building (Plan and Elevation) Unit II Power Plant, IC Engines, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning System Power plant – Classification, Working principle - steam, Gas, Diesel, Hydro-electric and Nuclear Power plants. IC Engines - Working principle of Petrol and Diesel Engines, Four stroke and two stroke cycles, Comparison.
