This section describes basic usage of the common product structure, and contains enough information for you to get started, using the system as
supplied. You can use one of the two approaches described, or combine them as you become more confident.
Later sections in this topic describe the functions in more detail, and you should read them to gain a greater understanding prior to more sophisticated
use.
Editing Structure in NX
One approach to this facility is to do all of your product structure editing in NX. If you do this, then you do not have access to some of the more
sophisticated functions in Structure Manager, but you can still gain the benefits of having your product structure stored in the database for access by
other applications, and the ability to perform a Where Used query.
To do this, follow these guidelines:
Do all edits within the NX part of the system. Use Structure Manager only for viewing the Bill of Materials (BOM).
Leave the settings of the structure update customer defaults exactly as supplied (load and save both on).
Create and manipulate geometric components in your assemblies exactly as required, in the usual way. They are all kept up to date in the database
automatically.
Add a manual parts list entry for any components that should not appear as geometric objects, such as spares or fixings that you do not want to
model. They are kept up to date in the database. Make sure that the parts list format includes a field using the attribute DB_PART_NO, otherwise
Teamcenter Integration does not know which part is intended for a manually added entry.
Any components that are present in the NX assembly for reference purposes and that should not form part of the Structure Manager BOM (e.g., jigs,
fixtures, etc.) have to be marked as such. This is done by adding a component attribute with the title REFERENCE_COMPONENT. The value of this
attribute does not matter.
