THE STORY OF TITANIC

Titanic is the largest ship in the world on its maiden voyage and one of three
Olympic-class ocean vessels is operated by White Star Line. This ship was built
in 1909 to 1911 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. This ship is
capable of carrying 2,224 passengers. This ship is designed as comfortable and
as luxurious as possible, equipped with a gymnasium, swimming pool, library,
upscale restaurant and luxury cabin. Because of the very large and luxurious
ship, people believe Titanic will not be damaged and sink.

Titanic departed from Southampton on April 10, 1912, then stopped at

Cherbourg, France and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland and finally sailed west
to New York, crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

But, when crossing the Atlantic ocean supervisor Frederick Fleet saw an iceberg
right in front of Titanic. First Officer, William Murdoch ordered the ship to be
turned around the ice and the engine set back, but it was too late. Titanic's right
side hit an iceberg, thus creating a ship leak. Titanic began to sink its bow first,
with water entering from one compartment to another when the angle of the
ship in the water grew steeper.

Titanic passengers were not ready to face such an emergency situation.

Lifeboats only carry half of the total passengers. Even crew members have not
been properly trained in evacuation. The officers did not know how many
people they could transport to the lifeboats and launched most of the lifeboats in
a half-full state. Only 13 people were rescued to the lifeboat, even though the
lifeboat was able to accommodate nearly 500 more people. Women and children
were generally got into the lifeboats and most male passengers and crew were
left on ship. Third-class passengers were mostly left to fend for themselves, so
many were trapped under deck when the ship was filled with water. The Titanic
then sank and killed 1500 passengers. Nearly everyone in the water dies
because hypothermia or a heart attack within minutes or drowning, and 710
people survived this disaster and they were transported by Carpathia to New
York, the destination city of Titanic.
