WHAT IS SUBJECT ?

 Subject Structure/Scheme

 Examinations Scheme

 Subject/Course Outcome (CO)

Why Fiber Optic Communication?
Advantages of FOC:
1. Carry Large amount of data (λ=c/f)
2. Higher data rate (> 10Gb/s….at the speed of
light)
3. No electric current ( light flow)
4. Good security (Can not be trapped)
5. No corrosion due to water (plastic, silica glass
fiber)
6. No Electromagnetic Interference (plastic, silica
glass fiber)
Disadvantage of FOC:
1. Higher initial infrastructure cost and problem of
splicing.
Elements of an Optical Fiber
Transmission Link
 In fiber optic communications light is used
as a carrier.

 Light Intensity/Power is changed with the

amplitude of the information signal.

 This type of modulation is called as

“Intensity Modulation”.

Three Optical Windows:
 In this optical windows 850 nm,1300nm & 1550nm the attenuation
is less. Hence optical communication is done in these windows.
