STRENGTH OF MATERIALS - II
2) A hallow circular shaft 12m long is required to transmit 15MW when running at a speed of
300r.p.m.If the maximum shearing stress allowed in the shaft is 80 MPa and the ratio of inner
diameter to the outer diameter is ¾, find the dimension of the shaft and also the angle of twist of
one of the shaft related to the other. Modulus of rigidity of the material is 80GPa.
3) An open –coiled helical spring consists of 10 coils, each of mean diameter 5 cm, the wire forming
the coils being 6mm diameter, and making a constant angle of 30o with planes perpendicular to the
axis of the spring. What load will cause the spring to elongate 1.25cm and what will be the bending
and shearing stress due to the this load? Calculate the value of axial twist which would cause a
bending stress of 56 MPa in the coil. E=210GPa and G=84GPa.
4) A slender pin ended aluminium column 1.8m long and of circular cross section is to have an
outside diameter of 50 mm. Calculate the necessary internal diameter to prevent failure by bulking if
the actual load applied is 13.6 kN and the critical load applied is twice the actual load. Take E for
aluminium as 70GN/m2
1)If a closed coiled helical spring is subjected to load W and the deflection produced is δ then
stiffness of the spring is given by
a)W/ δ b)W. δ c) δ/W d)W2. δ
4) The lower layer of the beam as shown in the below fig will be
a) in tension b) in compression c)neither in tension nor in compression d)none of these
10) While determining crippling load, the effective length of solid circular bar is 1/ √2 of actual length
if, _______
a) both ends of solid circular bar are fixed b)both ends of solid circular bar are hinged
c)one end is fixed and one is free d)one end is fixed and other end is hinged
10) A helical spring of constant k is cut into four equal pieces and the four pieces are then combined
in parallel. The equivalent spring constant will be _____________
