Dance

– Kinetic art form that uses the body, space, and formation to express a message or produce an
aesthetic.

Ballet
- A dance form that follows a rigid set of criteria focused on arm movement and positioning (port de
bras), lower body movement (turnout), and posture (alignment).
- Started during the Renaissance in the Italian courts.
- Developed into a dance presented in concert form in France and Russia.

Modern Dance and Theater


– a performance form that is similar to ballet but characterized by freeform movements coming from
the dancer’s own emotions and routines.

SOCIAL DANCE
– Dances performed in halls during social occasions. Usually formal and involves young ladies and
gentries of a community.

Rigodon de Honor
- A formal square dance with strict movements and formations.
- Participants usally wear ternos and barong tagalogs.

Ballroom Dancing
- Usually done by a couple in different dance duets.
- Considered as a competition and sport.

FOLK AND INDIGENOUS DANCES


- Dances created by country folks.

Tinikling
- Consists of a man and woman dancing against two bamboo poles that are struck together to the beat
of the music.
- They are not supposed to be caught by the bamboos while dancing.
- The tempo is speeded up and more pairs of dancers are often featured.

Maglalatik
- Originated from Biñan, Laguna.
- Combative dance done by men.
- Done by fitting coconut shells all throughout their bare bodies and making a rhythm by clicking them
against one another.
- Represents a fight between Christians and Muslims fighting over latik, coconut milk residue.

Sakuting
- An Ilocano dance performance influence by the Chinese.
- Done by holding two sticks and beating them against each other at different positions.
Polkabol
- Festival dance originating from Quezon.
- Done by combining movements from waltz and polka.
- Fast dances done in two-fourth time.
- Derived from the country of Bohemia.

Sayaw sa Bangko
- A dance performed on top of a long wooden stool.
- Usually executed with a man and woman showing their balance on the stools as they cavort without
falling.

Jota
- Has many variations throughout the country.
- A fast waltz done in three-four time.
- Using props to produce sound that is in synced with the music.

Pandango
- Derived from the Spanish dance, fandango.
- A courtship dance that is executed with different objects that define its variations.

Singkil
- A muslim dance where the main dancer is the princess.
- She traverses along two pairs of bamboo, while an attendant holds a parasol on top of her head.
- Starts quite slowly and gradually increases in speed.

Subli
- A dance form originating from Batangas.
- A musical accompaniment played by the rondolla to ladies with hats and men performing flirtatious
movements.

Pangalay or Igal
- Originating from the Sulu-Tawi-Tawi archipelago, among the Tausag and Samal.
- Danced by both men and women with intricate feet and hand movements.
- Dancers usally don’t about the space, they shuffle using mincing footwork.
- Has many variants.

Tayaw
- Traditional dance form from the Ibaloi people from Benguet.
- A ritual dance performed during special occasions.
- Executed by a man and woman moving to the rhythm of a sulibao ensemble assisted by a priest called
the mambunong, who gives a blessing called datok.
