Scope and Objective

The aim of the course is to deal with various

electronic techniques and building blocks used
in analog signal processing. Discrete and
Integrated electronic circuits will be studied.
Experiments and projects using discrete IC
modules will be carried out in the laboratory.

Why Study Analog Electronics?

• Digital Electronics

• Analog Electronics

• Mixed Signal Electronics

Why Study Analog Electronics?

Too many so called “digital devices” around

How do the digital devices interact ?

Through Senses Light (eyes) , touch (Skin), sound (ears),

Why Study Analog Electronics?

The world around us is Analog

Light, sound, temperature, pressure, acceleration
all are analog quantities

Analog sensors, signal conditioning, data

converters are required

Why Study Analog Electronics?

In communications

RF signals require analog transmitters, receivers,

low noise amplifiers

Analog vs Digital

ANALOG DIGITAL
• Continuous values of physical • Discrete values of physical
variables (voltages/currents) variables (voltages, 0s and 1s)
• Primitives arises from physics • Primitives arises from
of computation devices; boolean logic ; using various
physical relationships of logic gates such as
transistors,resistors,capacitors; AND,OR,XOR,NAND
use KCL and KVL
• One wire represent many bits • One wire represent only
of information one bit of information

LRIL LRNI MMNIIN INRMNIN

Analog vs Digital
ANALOG DIGITAL
• Noise is due to thermal • Noise is due to round off errors
fluctuations
• Signal is not restored at each • Signal is restored to 0 or 1 in
stage each stage

• Cascading many analog stages • Round off error does not

accumulate noise; complex accumulate significantly;
systems are difficult to build complex systems are not
difficult to build

Discrete and Integrated Circuits

Electronic circuits
Discrete:
Circuit elements, Transistors, Resistors, Capacitors
interconnected by wires or metal traces

Integrated:
All components formed on insulating or semiconducting
substrate, interconnected by metal lines.

Many identical ICs made on a single wafer.

Size of an IC = 1 mm x 1 mm to 20 mm x 20 mm

Discrete and Integrated Circuits

Thin-film circuits
- Fabricated on an insulating substrate, by vacuum
evaporation and photolithography and etching of metal
Thick-film circuits
- Screen printing and firing of films to form
conductors, capacitors and resistors
Hybrid circuits
2/9/2020
- Combination of monolithic, discrete and film circuits14
