BARAZONA, APRIL ANN S.

The movie is besetting by the firmed central character who elicits sympathy, but who
also inspires dignity and superbness. Indeed, the character is the film and it is through
this character that the film treats a whole variety of themes – friendship, loyalty,
courage and a lot more. I like the movie in the sense that it is beautifully made. It is
written and directed with the perfect balance of drama, pathos and humour.

It is the main character, Forrest, whom I liked the most. Forrest is relatively simple and he
just gets on with life, showing respect and tolerance towards others, while other more
“intelligent” members of society appear to create problems for themselves and others
by thinking too much. Forrest made “stupidity” in the film but another way of looking on
this is to see him as “uncluttered” or pure of heart. Forrest’s uncluttered and positive
way of seeing things is proved right in the long term, while negativity is seen as self-
perpetuating and potentially unhealthy.

In the story, Forrest often repeated the saying, “My mom always, ‘Life is like a box of
chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.’” No matter what came his way
in life, he overcame by staying positive and making the most of each situation.
Throughout his life he endured a variety situations – some highlights and some trials. In
situations where other people would have caved I or would have become depressed,
he remained strong and encouraged others to do the same in spite of his short
comings. He proved that any dream can be accomplished if you just believe.

Yes, there are times that I never knew what I want in life. Life is a scary thing. There are
times I find myself worrying about what future brings. As a college student, I worry about
where specific major can take me. If making right connections can lead me to the right
opportunities and I stress about whether or not I made the right decision constantly.

The movie helps me to understand that I don’t always need to explain myself. There is
no need to constantly explain to others why we do things that are important to us.
Thanks to Forrest Gump for showing what is important in life, and how I should never fail
to keep my heads up and focus forward.
