MAHALAGA (12L Group 1)

Yee, Ramon Miguel M.

The most vivid experience I had when we visited Sitio Makabuhay is
seeing how young the mothers of the children were. The mother we were
paired up with was about 24 and her husband was still there. I was surprised
to hear from my other classmates that some of their mothers were 19 and
had children, and their husbands were not with them but in bilibid prison.
This was very surprising but also kind of sad because I saw how much work
the mother does just to provide for her children and sometimes the eldest
would have to work just to help support the family. I remember trying to
think of a topic with my groupmates, we might have used about two
meetings trying to decide because we really couldn’t agree on one until one
of our groupmates suggested the topic of single parents and we all agreed.
During the project making, we got closer as a group because we shared with
each other our home situations and how this could really help the kids and
families of Sitio Makabuhay. When it was our defence, I remember one of the
Sitio Makabuhay panelists saying how our project would help better the
situation right now in the community, how teaching the children is the way
to go because they are our future. During the implementation, we shared our
situations and trials in the house with our parents in siblings to the fellow
people in Sitio Makabuhay. They shared theirs and we really got to see
everyone’s side of the story.

Our project exemplifies what a lasallian graduate should be because it
supports economic growth. It supports economic growth, because our
project helps the family think about their decisions and spread the chores
around the house evely. This also helps preserve the environment because it
teaches the kids the value of starting a family and everything you need to do
before hand to ensure your family is safe and well fed.

We hope that in 5 years or so, there will be less mothers at a young age
and have a complete family so the load does not have to be shouldered by
the parents alone. We also hope that the chores around their households
would be distributed more evenly so that kids at a young age can develop
more maturity but not too much that their childhood will be taken away from
them. Also help the parents maintain their time to work and take care of their
children.
