CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Electrical safety awareness on using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plays a

prominent role in ensuring overall health and safety on the work place. Safety should be

defined as reduction of risk to a level that is as low as reasonable and as practicable. It is

a state of mind and environment that must become an integral part of each working

procedure. The reason why individual should integrated safety and permanent effectively.

According to Raju basak (2015) Electrical safety is more important, because we

could not apparently realize that, what amount of current a simple cable or a bare

conductor carrying or at a glance we could not ascertain whether a conductor is alive or

dead. This harmless appearance could misguide us. And this is the root cause of most of

electrical accident. Accident is an unexpected event causing loss of life or bodily injury

and loss of property. Safety Precaution means to strictly follow the prescribed rules for

safety of self, working personnel and tools to conduct electrical work, otherwise

possibility of electric shock or hazards could be experienced.

In NFPA research many electrical injuries result in significant time away from the

job – 41 percent of injuries require more than two weeks away from work. Between 2012

and 2016, 9,760 workers in the U.S. were injured through exposure to electricity – an

average of 1,952 annually. Between 2007 and 2016, 21,550 workers in the U.S.

experienced some type of non-fatal electrical injury. The reasons are not following safety

precaution.

Young and new workers have a high risk for work related injury compared with

more experienced workers because on lack of experience and knowledge about the safety
precaution. Student should be familiarized in safety awareness in applying on the work

place.

1.2 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study was guided by the conceptual paradigm presented as figure 1.

Figure 1: Conceptual Design of the study

This study will utilize the independent and dependent variables model. The independent

variables of this study are the profile of the respondent which are the age, sex and strand

while the dependent variables is the electrical safety awareness using of PPE.

1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The investigator aims to assess the level of electrical hazard and safety measure

awareness among electrical student in ZCSPC SHS.

1. What is the demographic profile of the EIM Student in ZCSPC SHS in terms of?

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Strand
2. The level of electric hazard awareness among electrical student of ZCSPC SHS.

3. The level of applying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on the work place for

safety precaution.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The outcome of this study may be beneficial to the school administrator, teacher, and

students.

For the school administrators

The administrator may gain a clear insight of the safety precaution for awareness on

electrical hazard and also the administrator will be able to create a program regarding on the

safety awareness and using the PPE in the work place.

For the Teacher

The Teacher will orient their student regarding on using Personal Protective Equipment

in safety awareness and electric hazard.

For the Student

Finding of this study would give a clear insight to the student on applying the Personal

Protective Equipment (PPE) for their safety precaution and avoid electric hazard.
1.5 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The focus of this study is to assess the using of PPE and level of electrical hazard and

safety measurement on awareness among electrical student in ZCSPC SHS. The study may

generalize only for the electrical student. That all students involve in this study shall answer

truthfully question related to Electrical safety awareness on using PPE.

The study is delimited to electrical Student in ZCSPC SHS who were enrolled this SY

2019-2020.

1.6 OPERATIONAL AND DIFINITION OF TERMS

Personal Protective Equipment- Electrical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program

provides requirements to ensure electrical workers are protected from electrical hazards

while working on electrical equipment. Employees who work with electrical equipment shall

be provided with appropriate electrical PPE and be knowledgeable in the selection, use,

limitations, inspection, donning, doffing, and maintenance of PPE.

Safety awareness- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires any employees

required to work on or near electrical systems, must be competent. This is defined in HSE

guidance as having the suitable training, skill, knowledge for the task to prevent injury to

themselves and others

Electrical hazard- is a dangerous condition where a worker can or does

make electrical contact with energized equipment or a conductor.
