PROBLEM

A gaming website affirms that the average time spent by students in playing

computer and mobile games is 5.96 hours per day. Thirty five random students was

surveyed and has a mean of 4.28 hours and has a standard deviation of 2.52 hours. Is

the claim of the website true? Test hypothesis using 95% level of significance.

Specifically, the tasks are as follows:

a. State the null hypothesis (H0) and alternative hypothesis (H1)

b. Identify the test statistic to be used.

c. State the level of significance.

d. State the decision rule.

e. Gather the data needed and perform the necessary computations.

f. Make a statistical decision.

g. State the conclusion.

DATA ANALYSIS

a. State the null hypothesis (Ho) and alternative hypothesis (H1)

H0: µ = 5.96

H1: µ ≠ 5.96

The null hypothesis (H0) is the commonly accepted fact; it is opposite of the

researchers’ hypothesis which is denoted by H1. The researchers work is to reject or

approve the null hypothesis. Researchers come up with an alternate hypothesis, one

that explains a phenomenon, and then work to test the null hypothesis.

b. Identify the test statistics to be used

z-test

(two-tailed)

Z-test is used when a large sample size (n>30) is being calculated. Since the

data gathered was normally distributed in a 35 randomly selected students, the

researcher used z-statistics. The researcher’s hypothesis is that the average hours of

the students in playing computer and mobile games is not equal to the claim of the

website.

c. State the level of significance (ex. 5% or ɑ = 0.05)

5% or ɑ = 0.05

This study used an alpha 0.05, which is commonly used in most researches.

d. State the decision rule (ex. Reject H0 if z-computed > z-tabulated)

Reject H0 if | z-computed | < | postive z-tabulated |, or

Reject H0 if | z-computed | > | negative z-tabulated |

The decision rule states under what circumstances to reject the null hypothesis.

Since two-tailed was used, the decision would reject H0 if the z-computed is less than

the positive z-tabulated or the z-computed is greater than the negative z-tabulated

based on the alpha.

e. Gather the data needed and perform the necessary computations

𝑥̅ − 𝜇
𝑧 − 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 𝑠
Given values
√𝑛
𝜇 = 5. 96
4.28 − 5.96
𝑧 − 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 𝑛 = 35
2.52
√35 𝑠 = 2.52
−1.68 𝑥̅ = 4.28
𝑧 − 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑑 =
0.3381

𝑧 − 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑑 = −4.97

0.05
𝑧 − 𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 0.5000 −
2

𝑧 − 𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 0.4750

𝑧 − 𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = ±1.96

The level of significance is 5%. This gives the value of the tabulated z equal to

1.96, and since the researchers is determining the values in both side of the normal

distribution, the tabulated z must be ±1.96.

f. Make a statistical decision

Reject H0 since,

| z-computed | < | z-tabulated |

Rejection Zone

Figure 1. The Normal Curve Distribution

The critical values/tabulated z was calculated based on the value of the level of

significance and was figured in a z-table. The shaded part is the rejection region. This

states what values should be accepted or rejected. Since the computed z (-4.97) is

located in the rejecting zone, the null hypothesis (H0) should be rejected.

g. Conclusion

Therefore, there is a sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim of the

website that the average time spent by students in playing computer and mobile games

per day is 5.96.
