About Unnat Bharat Abhiyan
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) is a program of Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Government of India which aims at the technological, social and cultural betterment of rural
India with the help of students and faculty members of higher education institutes in India.
Under the aegis of UBA, IIT Roorkee has identified two village clusters – Chharba Cluster and
Meerpur Cluster and a stand-alone village, Beladi – Salhapur. The team has in total identified
eight villages – Chandpur -Kala, Chandpur-Khurd, Chharba, Horawala, Meerpur-Muwazarpur,
Jhabarpur, Puranpur and Beladi-Salhapur.

About Beladi-Salhapur
Beladi-Salhapur village is located in the Roorkee block of Haridwar district. The village is
governed by Beladi-Salhapur Gram Panchayat. Its location code or village code No. is 056436
(according to census 2011). It is at a distance of 7 km from Roorkee and about 350m from NH-
58 which connects Roorkee to Haridwar. The nearest major Railway stations are Roorkee and
Haridwar Junction. The total geographical area of the village is 248.77 hectares. Beladi-
Salhapur has a total population of 2500(approx.) peoples. Nearly 70 percent of the villagers
are engaged in agriculture or agriculture-related work, though the number of big farmers is
very less majority of the farmers are low scale farmers, 20-25 percent people work as
agriculture and construction workers and the rest are engaged in either dairy and other
animal products’ selling and a very few numbers of people are employed in service sector
(private companies etc.).
There are two Government schools in this village for boys and girls. There is one Co-
operative Society (more of a Self-Help Group) in this village which provides a loan to the
villagers, but this society also doesn’t function smoothly due to the lack of money with the
group. Majority of the population belongs to SC. The caste distribution of the village has
mainly two castes Rhods and Sainis. If a few number of houses of the upper caste are kept

aside the majority of the houses are made of bricks and having 1-2 rooms. The main source
of drinking water is the hand pumps (groundwater) installed nearly at every house. Public
water taps are also installed by the Government. The number of such taps is around 20-30.
But the taps remain waterless most of the times as testified by the villagers. The home
cleanliness level is decent but the village-level sanitation, cleanliness of ponds and water
bodies, the public drains and the scattered waste around the village presents a governance
issue in the village.

Inspiration
On the basis of previous visits in the village Beladi the team observed excess plastic bags in
use and excess dumping which inspired team to organise plastic free campaign under
“Swatchhta Hi Sewa” campaign of MHRD. Use of non-degradable sources like plastics for daily
use purposes is harmful for nature as well as can even cost even lives of breeding animals.
The aim was to spread awareness in best possible to make villagers aware of problems faced
due to the use of same and distribution of cloth bags to make it a habit of their use as a
substitute of plastic bags.
