About Unnat Bharat Abhiyan
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) is a program of Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Government of India which aims at the technological, social and cultural betterment of rural
India with the help of students and faculty members of higher education institutes in India.
Under the aegis of UBA, IIT Roorkee has identified two village clusters – Chharba Cluster and
Meerpur Cluster and a stand-alone village, Beladi-Salhapur. The team has in total identified
eight villages – Chandpur -Kala, Chandpur-Khurd, Chharba, Horawala, Meerpur-Muwazarpur,
Puranpur and Beladi-Salhapur.

About the village Chharba


Chharba is a large village located in Vikasnagar of Dehradun district, Uttarakhand with total
1425 families residing. Chharba covers an area of about 1567.9 hectares. It is situated 7 km
away from sub-district headquarter Vikasnagar and 22 km away from district headquarter
Dehradun. Herbertpur is nearest town to Chharba which is approximately 6 km away. As per
2009 stats, Chharba is the gram panchayat of Chharba village constituting 13 wards in it.

Inspired by these thoughts and with a determination to change the perceptions of common
people over plastic waste, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (Team Chharba) IIT Roorkee decided to
conduct an awareness campaign named “Swachhta hi Seva” with a vision to inculcate a feeling
of concern regarding the harmful effects of plastic waste in the minds of villagers. A common
household survey form was also meant to be filled alongside with the campaign.

Details of the event

Initial Phase (Preparing Strategies)


The team didn’t want to let loose on strategic grounds, so proper meetings were held and
adequate amount of time was dedicated to plan the proceedings of the event day. For this, a
meeting was held on September 24, 2019.

Proceedings of the meeting held on September 24, 2019:


 The agenda stated by Mr Lalit Gautam was unanimously approved and the meeting
began at 09:25 PM.
 The meeting began with Mr Lalit Gautam briefing about the “Swachhta hi Seva”
campaign to be conducted on September 29, 2019. Mr Lalit further added that during
the campaign, the team members will tell about the harmful effects of plastics and
will distribute the cloth bags in exchange of the plastic bags from the villagers. The
students of GIC Chharba and Madarsa will help the team members in the rally.
o Mr Lalit further added that a survey of households is also to be conducted
alongside the campaign. For filling of survey forms, the team members who
will be going on visit will split into sub-teams of two so as to cover as many
wards as possible.
 As it was going to be the first visit of the first-year members of the team, so it was
decided that sub-teams will include a first-year member along-with a second-year
member to guide them in the village.

Proceedings of the visit day:


 The team left Roorkee at 07:00 AM and reached Chharba at 10:45 PM.
 Upon reaching Chharba, the team first decided to conduct the household
survey and got divided into seven groups to accomplish the same. Each team consisted
of one second year member and one or two first year members.
 The team decided to cover wards 3, 4, 5 and 6 and accordingly got distributed to cover
the respective survey areas. While filling the survey forms the team also told the house
members about the " Swachhta hi Seva " campaign and also explained them about the
serious hazards the plastic waste cause to the environment. The teams also provided
cloth bags in exchange of plastic bags.
 The team members also invited the household people in the rally supporting plastic
free India which was scheduled to start at 02:00 PM from Santoshi Mata Temple.
 The team gathered at the Santoshi Mata Temple after successfully filling 82 forms and
then planned for the rally.
 The team then started the rally chanting slogans for plastic free India along-with 20-
30 villagers of villagers and motivated the people passing by to come and join the rally.

 The team members also exchanged cloth bags for plastic bags with the shopkeepers
alongside the road during the rally and campaigned for plastic free India with great
enthusiasm.
 The team also invited the village Pradhan to come and join the rally for better
interaction with the villagers but he couldn't come due to some work.
 After 1 hour of rally, the team then decided to conclude the rally in an interactive note
by making a feedback video from one of the villagers.
 The team then left Chharba at 03:45 PM and reached Roorkee at 06:45 PM.
