 Power Hacksaw

Description:
Power hacksaws is an automated saw machines which are made to easily cut large
sections of metals (10 to 15mm in diameter) such as steel which is usually hard work
using handheld saws.
Operation:
The metal to be cut is secured in a machine vise with a turning screw handle.
Once the metal piece is in place, the arm is lowered using an adjusting handle and the
user will turn on the hacksaw and begin cutting. Two pulleys wheels and a motor power
the hack saw back and forth. During metal cutting, coolant is added to the metal piece to
avoid heat build up and apply lubrication.
Safety:
- Keep hands away from saw blade during cutting operations
- Ensure power supply is disconnected before removal/installation of saw
blades
- Proper Protective Gear must be worn prior to operation
Parts:

Vice

 Arm – used to hold the blade in place

 Blade – used to cut the workpiece
 Vice – Used to hold the workpiece
 Handle – adjusts the vice
 Coolant Feeder – applies coolant unto the workpiece
 Drill Press
Description:
A drill press is used to drill holes of different sizes into a certain material using a
drill bit.
Operation:
Appropriate drill bit must be installed prior to drilling. The material to be drilled
is then secured on the drill press table. Once secured, the user will turn on the machine
and lower the drill bit using the hand wheel. Once done, machine must be turned off
before removing the drill bit.
Safety:
- Keep hands away from drill bit during operation
- Ensure power supply is disconnected before removal/installation of drill bits
- Proper Protective Gear must be worn prior to operation
Parts:

Drill Bit

Table Table Clamp

 Chuck – holds and secures the drill bit

 Hand wheel – used to lower the drill bit unto the workpiece
 Table Clamp – used to secure the machine table
 Table – this is where the workpiece is placed
 Drill Bit – used to drill into the workpiece
 Electric Motor – powers the drill press
 Shaper
Description:
A shaper is made to make flat surface, grooves and slots through reciprocating
motions into the workpiece.
Operation:
The work piece is set on the machine table of the shaper and is secured between
vises. Once secured, the cutting tool is lowered unto the workpiece and the user turns on
the machine. Reciprocating motion cuts the workpiece into the desired shape.
Safety:
- Keep hands away from the cutting tool during operation
- Ensure power supply is disconnected before removal/installation of
workpieces
- Proper Protective Gear must be worn prior to operation

Base

 Base – main body of the shaper

 Ram – provides reciprocating motion; holds the tool used when shaping
 Machine Table – holds the workpiece
 Vice – secures the workpiece in place
 Lathe Machine
Description:
Lathe machines are used to rotate a workpiece for various operations like turning,
facing, knurling, carving and grooving.
Operation:
The workpiece is secured between the headstock and the tailstock. Once secured,
the user turns on the machine and as the workpiece turns, the user carves the workpiece
using available appropriate carving/grooving tools.
Safety:
- Secure workpiece in the machine properly
- Ensure power supply is disconnected before removal/installation of
workpieces
- Proper Protective Gear must be worn prior to operation
Parts:

Carriage

 Headstock – holds the gear train, main spindle, chuck, gear speed control levers,
and feed controllers
 Carriage – it carries the apron, saddle, compound rest, cross slide, and tool post
 Lead Screw – used to move the carriage during threading
 Hand Wheel – operated by hand to move the cross slide, carriage, tailstock, and
other parts
 Tailstock – it provides support to the workpiece from one end
 Bed – it comprises the headstock, tailstock, carriage guideways, and other parts

 Milling Machine
Description:
Milling machines are used to remove metals from a workpiece through a
revolving cutter which is called the milling cutter.
Operation:
The workpiece is secured on the machine table. Once secured, the milling cutter is
lowered onto the workpiece and the user turns on the machine. Once the machine is done
cutting, the machine is turned off and the workpiece is removed.
Safety:
- Secure workpiece in the machine properly
- Ensure power supply is disconnected before removal/installation of
workpieces
- Proper Protective Gear must be worn prior to operation
Parts:

Base

 Ram – moves transversally while it mills the workpiece

 Machine Table – used to hold the workpiece
 Column – contains the oil reservoir which lubricates the spindle
 Base – holds the column in place; main body of milling machine
 Arbor Support – helps align the outer end of the arbor with the spindle
 Motor – provides power to the milling machine
 Spindle – holds and drives the cutting tools in the milling machine
