Historical timeline

1620-1750: Colonies

1620- Colonial schools, parochial schools, dame, reading+ writing + Latin and grammar. Mostly

for boys going to universities, dame where held in the kitchen lasted 3 to 6 months. Parochial

schools based on religion.

1635- Boston Latin School founded Philemon Pormont

1642- Massachusetts Act of 1642. First act to pass in the country, everyone has to learn how to

read

1647- Massachusetts Act of 1647 meaning there had to be a school for every 50 houses

1704- Elias Neau, opened the first school for African Americans and native Americans.

1745- Arithmetic was introduced

Texts: Horn book, bible, religious catechisms, New England primer (1690)

1750-1820: revolutionary period

1751- Philadelphia Academy, Benjamin Franklin opened it for boys and girls all who could

afford it.

1770- Philadelphia African School

1779- Thomas Jefferson proposed to the Virginia legislature his bill for the general diffusion of

knowledge, making elementary schools free.

1792- Sarah Pierce Litchfield female academy, a vocational school, teaching table manners and

house chores.

1824- Virginia University

People: Benjamin Franklin, Sarah Pierce, Thomas Jefferson, Noah Webster and Anthony

Benezet

1820-1865: State supported “common schools”

1821- First State supported high school in the U.S

Late 1820s to early 1830s- a division between those for and against common schools

1837- Horse Man became secretary of the Massachusetts board of education

1836 to 1860- McGuffy Readers text used for 1st to 6th grade

1849- Electa Lincon Walton became the first women to administer a state normal school

1850- The case Robert vs. city of Boston declared “separate but equal”

1855- Margarthe Schure opened 1st us kindergarten spoken in German

1857- National education Association (NEA)

1862- Morrill Land Grant act provided federal land to raise money for schools

1800 to 1878- Cathine Beecher campaigned for woman’s education

1865-1920: Compulsory Education which is a law requiring children to attend a public or state-

accredited private school for a certain period of time

1869- 64% attended public schools

1880- Booker T Washington “up from slavery” African Americans can benefit from education

1892- NEA committee of ten

1893- Committee of 15 recommends elementary curriculum

1896- Plessy vs. Ferguson segregation of schools

1990- Demand for teachers caused women to be the face of education

1913- NEA recognition of secondary education

1920- 78% children attended schools

1920-1945: Progressive Era

1919- Progressive Education Association founded by John Dewey

1924- Native American granted citizenship, students forced in military like schools

1928- Report titled “The problem of Indian administrators” recommend that Native Americans

education be reconstructed

1930- The great depression, 24% of 2 million youths were out of schools or jobless. Mary

McLead Bethure made it possible for 150,000 African Americans to attend high school and

60,000 to graduate from college

1941- The Lanham Act is the federal statute that governs trademarks, service marks, and unfair

competition. It was passed by Congress on July 5, 1946 and signed into law by President Harry

Truman

1944- G.I Bill of Rights providing benefits to World War II veterans

Schools: John Dewey’s Laboratory school: testing progressive, principles in classrooms. Maria

Montessori: poor pre-schools, mental, physical and spiritual development. Boarding School for

Native Americans: forced assimilation, would hit kids who spoke their native language.

1945- Present: Modern Era

1954- Desegregation begins with rejection of “separate but equal” with Brown vs. Board of

education of Topeka

1957- Soviet Union Launched first satellite, the Sputnik

1958- National defense education act: new math, science, and social studies

1960s- Kennedy and Johnson: subsized lunch/ breakfast programs

1965- Elementary and secondary education act-low income and limited English children

1968- Title VII bilingual education act based on low-income children

1970s accountability and equal opportunity

1972- Title XI no discrimination on sex

1975- Education for all handicapped children act mainstreaming law

1990s- Teacher’s leadership

1994- President Bill Clinton signs into law goals 2000: educate America act

1996- President Bill Clinton launches the Presidents educational teaching initiative

1999- President Bill Clinton signs the educational excellence for all children act 22002-

President George bush signs into the law No child left behind act of 2001

2010- President barrack Obama proposes broad changes to no child left behind and initiates the

re-authorization of the elementary and secondary education act, implements Race to the Top and

the teacher and leader innovation fund
